Story
From evolution to the epidural and beyond, Tina Cassidy presents an intelligent, enlightening, and impeccably researched cultural history of how and why we're born the way we are. Women have been giving birth for millennia, but that's about the only constant in the final stage of the great process that is human reproduction. Why is it that every culture and generation seems to have its own ideas about the best way to give birth?

Having given birth to four children, three in the '80's and one in the '90's, I'm an "experienced" mother. But I did not know about the history of birth experiences in our country or around the world. So I found this very informative and intriguing to hear. And sad, too, to learn about the horrors of so many women's experience. I enjoyed the book very much though and would recommend.

I chose this from a selection of books to read for doula training. It was well read; she was easy to listen to. Hearing of experiences very different from mine, I learned a lot of things through their lenses.
