Story
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

The bond between grandson and grand mother

Very enlightening on the lives of the poor in Appalachia. Amazing that JD got over the abominable mother he had. I think he was way more patient and forgiving than I could have managed. Loved hearing his story from him. I am an agent at a large international speakers bureau, and he did an amazing job narrating his own story, I would have booked him to speak in a second.

The narrator’s voice ruined the story
Reviewed: 06-18-24
Several times I almost quit listening to the book because I didn’t think I could bear to hear the nasally unpleasant voice of the narrator anymore. I managed to get through to the end but will avoid any book narrated by this person. Just so grading on the ears.story was somewhat interesting.

Story
My darling little boy Albie adores playing at our new neighbours’ house. And after the terrible year we’ve had, I feel so lucky that we can start over in this perfect place, with new friends who treat Albie like the son they never had. He can’t stop talking about the tree house they’re building him, and the cookies they bake together. But as time passes, something starts to feel wrong. Why don’t they ever open the front door more than a crack? They told me they had no children so who does the small pink tricycle I saw in their hall belong to?

I tried resisting him. I fought to ensure history wouldn’t repeat itself. In the end, Jackson and I knew he would win. He broke down my walls, obliterated every excuse, and made me love him against all odds. Then he shattered my heart into thousands of pieces. I can’t let him back in. It was hard enough surrendering my heart the first time. If he hurts me again, I’ll never survive. No matter what he thinks, we’re beholden to our past.

Story
In 2015, Mary Yoder returned home from the chiropractic center that she operated with her husband, Bill, complaining that she felt unwell. Mary, health-conscious and vibrant, was suddenly vomiting, sweating, and weak. Doctors in the ER and ICU were baffled as to the cause of her rapidly progressing illness. Her loved ones - including Bill and their children, Adam, Tamryn, and Liana - gathered in shock to say good-bye. In the weeks that followed Mary's death, the grief-stricken family received startling news from the medical examiner: Mary had been deliberately poisoned with colchicine.

The content of the book was good and details easy to follow. But the narrators raspy voice and reading style made it hard for me to continue listening to. Will not ever get a book narrated by Danny Campbell.

Created a time of reflection and gratitude

Roseanne lost everyone she had love for. Which left her with bone chilling loneliness. She walked a road of such despair and yet remained a woman of open acceptance and cautious connection with the people she was able to meet in her limited world. I have so many blessings in my life. I should experience more true gratitude when compared to this main character. She may not be real, but it would not be wrong to make a comparison of her life to yours. The undercurrent of joy she had for simple pleasures despite her emotional wounds and scars is refreshing. The narrator did a lovely job.

Story
What is "the big lie" of the Democratic Party? That conservatives - and President Donald Trump in particular - are fascists. Nazis, even. In a typical comment, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow says the Trump era is reminiscent of "what it was like when Hitler first became chancellor." But in fact, this audacious lie is a complete inversion of the truth. Yes, there is a fascist threat in America - but that threat is from the Left and the Democratic Party.

Eye opener, just when you think you know history
Reviewed: 02-23-21
I will listen to this book again. The history reviews, that you never learned in college, are crucial to understanding where our country is headed. Conservative or progressive, listen with an open mind. If there is something you are shocked to find out, research it and make sure it is true and accurate. I did and am impressed and stunned these are not historical facts taught in school. We should not have to dig for our world history, but glad I was made aware so I could validate. Highly recommend this book.
