Story
As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In this New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life—the theologian and the spy—and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.

Wow...what a life.

This book was amazing. I have the physical copy in storage, but decided to listen to the book. There were so many moments I had to stop and think about what was just said or take some time to process his choices in life in comparison with my own. And, at the same time, I saw many of my family characteristics in his story as well--which was beautiful, as I wonder what parts of myself are cultural/stereotypical of German people, Lutheran people, etc.
The book was very thorough and well-written and I would gladly listen to another by this author.

Story
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Well worth the read...

This book was beautifully heart-wrenching to listen to and human. There were tough moments to listen to, moments I literally shouted into the emptiness around me encouragement, sympathy, sadness, anger, frustration over what was happening in the book, but this book has been impactful on my life spiritually, emotionally, and mentally and I cannot recommend it enough.

Balance is the goal

I loved this book! Creating balance in my busy life as a teacher has been a difficult ride this last season of life--however, after seeing Juliet tall about this book at the GLS, I knew it was exactly what I needed to help me get rid of the guilt, understand the true root problems underneath, and rise with hope for a better work/life balance. Thanks!

The kids are the least of our worries. Seriously. If that sounds blasphemous in a book for concerned parents and educators (and anyone, really, who worries about "kids these days"), then I am so glad you're here. If you have a kid, work with a kid, or love a kid, you will find something inspiring in this audiobook. Dare I say, game-changing.

I don't think in my life I have ever laughed or cried more than I have while listening to this book. I am renewed and feel understood as an educator of young children and, as a result, more excited about the work I do of connecting to kids and their families and those I am blessed to work with overseas. Everyone who works in any capacity with people needs to read this. 💜
