Story
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

Thoroughly enjoyed!

If for some reason you’ve not experienced the joy of the All Souls series, you’re in for a treat but take the time to go back to Book One. Once you’ve completed all of those in the series, then read this The Black Bird Oracle. (And do watch the show that was released in 2019, A Discovery of Witches. It was a wonderful adaptation.) Back to this book, it is rare that I read a book that I know I’ll come back to again and again. This is one of those. I listened first and then bought the hardcover for my library. The story is just so good and I’m incredibly bothered I’ve got to wait for her subsequent releases! Her story lines are woven like a gorgeous tapestry and you will move through the gamut of emotions as our protagonist battles to understand her magic and those that would take it from her. The only character that I don’t find as complex is Sarah. Her bitterness presents a one-sided way of being that is just irritating. Adding dimension to her anger and grief would be nice to read and add more believability to her relationship with her niece and those around her. Well done Deborah Harkness and please keep writing!

Wonderful story

I’m definitely drawn into the story and the narrator is a large part of why. The narrator changes in the next book and I find myself greatly annoyed at the change in voices the new narrator does. It’s too bad that the same narrator was not used throughout. Overall, the story is complex enough to be interesting, the protagonist is relatable but not so foolish that you grow tired of her immaturity like with some fantasy books. The love story that is the undercurrent of all of the books is believable and the dialogue is good. Worth the read/listen.

An Engaging Listen

Worthy of a listen! I found this to be entertaining and fast moving enough to carry me through to the end. I cannot say the same for many audio books. It was predictable in that you know who the actual bad guy is fairly quickly but there is enough curiosity about how Erin will traverse the events to listen on.
