Story
There is no bigger public health story now than the collapse in youth mental health. The numbers are terrifying and dominate our headlines. There has been much debate over how we got here, and what to do next, and bestselling author and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt is at the white-hot center of that discourse. Haidt has spent his career speaking wisdom and truth into the most difficult landscapes—communities polarized by politics and religion, campuses battling culture wars, and now the perfect storm contributing to a public health emergency for Gen Z.

Good concept, beaten to death
Reviewed: 02-28-25
This book could have been half (or less) in size. I appreciated the viewpoint and agreed with most of it. However, the same points were driven in over and over again. I didn't need that much repetition, which I found to be a waste of time.

How ironic that a book about brevity could have been shorter. A 15 min podcast would have done the trick.

In I'll Have What She's Having, entertainment journalist Erin Carlson tells the story of the real Nora Ephron and how she reinvented the romcom through her trio of instant classics. With a cast of famous faces including Reiner, Hanks, Ryan, and Crystal, Carlson takes listeners on a rollicking, revelatory trip to Ephron's New York City, where reality took a backseat to romance and Ephron - who always knew what she wanted and how she wanted it - ruled the set with an attention to detail that made her actors feel safe but sometimes exasperated crew members.

Quote frustrating narration unquote
Reviewed: 10-10-20
I enjoyed the insider information and insights on Nora's life and work. The audio version was immensely frustrating. The narrator's voice was good, but she said "quote unquote" a million times. Maybe not a million, but I'd venture to say thousands. Every time there was a quotation in the book we got a "quote blah blah blah unquote." Even when the entrance into it was "then hanks said quote blah blah blah unquote." That part was frustrating. So. Very. Frustrating.

I loved Judy Blume books growing up and was exciting about this adult book, but I was disappointed by the characters who lacked depth and a story that just went on and on. Maybe Judy Blume's target audience is tweenage girls, or maybe I've just outgrown her style.

Interesting book that I generally enjoyed as Horwitz explored his own passion for the Civil War, started when he was a child, the (extreme) passion of others and the continuing impact of the Civil War in many communities in our country. Those with an interest in the Civil War (War Between the States, War of Northern Aggression, War of Southern Rebellion...) would enjoy this.

Her love of all things historical, the joy she takes in quirky experiences at historical sites and events and her humor bring me absolute joy. I see much of myself in her and I have enjoyed everything she's written. This collection of essays takes you from the Dakotas to Paris to WA, DC. She shares her thoughts, experiences and family and it just makes me think that she could be my friend. Well done, Ms. Vowell, I'm ready for more!
