Story
Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet twenty years ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the city of angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles. Meanwhile, Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID are stolen.

Part taxonomy of murder, part prosecutor’s handbook, and part personal memoir, The Book of Murder goes through a dozen cases and his recollections of his 26 years in the Orange County DA’s office (17 in the Homicide Unit).

As a former prosecutor, I have been a fan of Matt Murphy’s phenomenal work on behalf of the people. This book is fascinating, compelling, and rings true. It’s made even better by his narration of the audiobook. Highest recommendation.

Set in a Lower East Side tenement in the early days of the COVID-19 lockdowns, Fourteen Days is an irresistibly propulsive collaborative novel from the Authors Guild, with an unusual twist: each character in this diverse, eccentric cast of New York neighbors has been secretly written by a different, major literary voice—from Margaret Atwood and John Grisham to Tommy Orange and Celeste Ng.

What a treat to read multiple short stories by extraordinary well-known authors, centered around residents at a low income NYC hotel for 2 wks during the beginning of the COVID pandemic. The stories were so interesting and brought back the fear we experienced before we understood what was happening and there was a vaccine. Great job by narrator too.

Trivialized w/cheesy romances
Reviewed: 05-28-24
I’ve never read/listened to Hannah b4, and I definitely won’t again. A very important subject, but poorly written and reduced to cheesy (unbelievable) romances. Do not recommend, at all, though narration was quite good.

Story
Alex Green is a young girl in a world much like ours, except for its most seminal event: the Mass Dragoning of 1955, when hundreds of thousands of ordinary wives and mothers sprouted wings, scales, and talons; left a trail of fiery destruction in their path; and took to the skies. Was it their choice? What will become of those left behind? Why did Alex’s beloved aunt Marla transform but her mother did not? Alex doesn’t know. It’s taboo to speak of.

I’ve avoided reading Lisa See bc I assumed she lacks Asian heritage (I was wrong), but I was asked to read it for a book club. (I was also wrong that her writing suffered by comparison to Amy Tan — if this is any indication). The history, plot, characters, and narration are flawless.
