Story
Fourteen-year-old Greg Dixon is living a nightmare. Attending boarding school outside of Boston, he is separated from his family when a pandemic strikes. His classmates and teachers are dead, rotting in a dormitory-turned-morgue steps from his room. The nights are getting colder, and his food has run out. The last message from his father is to get away from the city and to meet at his grandparents' town in remote New Hampshire.

Such a refreshing take on this genre

I love reading books about surviving global catastrophe and I loved the unique spin this one took. It felt hopeful while still possible.

Story
One morning, a man wakes up to find himself transformed. Overnight, Anders’s skin has turned dark, and the reflection in the mirror seems a stranger to him. At first he shares his secret only with Oona, an old friend turned new lover. Soon, reports of similar events begin to surface. Across the land, people are awakening in new incarnations, uncertain how their neighbors, friends, and family will greet them. As the bond between Anders and Oona deepens, change takes on a different shading: a chance at a kind of rebirth—an opportunity to see ourselves, face to face, anew.

So much potential

Great concept but not enough development. The narrator was unfortunate. Staccato style and monotonous voice made it very hard to get into this one.

Rushed and not her usual quality

I love so many of her books but this one felt like she rushed a book just so it hit the pandemic rush. Disappointing from character through storyline.

Wanted to love it but didn't

Too many characters to keep track of and too many story lines to keep straight. Thought it would remind me of the group of girls I grew up in a small town with and at times it did. I listed until the end, but I had many false starts as it was hard to get into.

This book is fantastic but as the story is so dark, it does leave you a bit sad. The characters and story are written beautifully and I felt myself wishing I could help. This is a book I will never forget reading and praise it highly as one of the best I have ever read. Absolutely worth spending your credits on.
