Story
College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same. Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran-and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder.

It was a good read
Reviewed: 04-30-21
Good read but there is cussing, rape, assault on minors, substance and mental health issues as well as a murder case (so if any of these things trigger you then hard pass) there were some graphic scenes that had me nauseous, cringing and at times rooting for vigilante justice shrug.... The villain was a terrible piece of #### and met a good end. You will be able to figure out who the villain is way before the end.
There is some romance I don’t agree with another review that said it was forced but it wasn’t pursued on her side in the beginning. I do think the intimate scene wasn’t needed but it soften the read a little. Overall I would recommend if the above don’t trigger you. Had I known I probably wouldn’t have used my credit but it really isn’t a bad audio and the narrator definitely made it better.

Story
When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern - no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove.

Didn’t disappoint after years of trying to finish this book.
I started to read this book back in college but with the demands of assignments then grad school never got around to finishing it. So finally looked it up on audible and started over. I was happy I did, the narrators were really good. I think the only thing I didn’t like was Abner’s cussing 🤬 😩 don’t like his particular choice of cuss words. There is another word that is used most frequently (N word) but you have to remember the time this was written so I hope you take that into consideration when reading. Try not to be offended by it. It was worth the credit.

Story
Lady Clarissa Crambray wanted a husband, but maybe not as much as her stepmother wanted one for her. Really! Doffing her spectacles might make a girl prettier, but how would she see? She'd already caused enough mayhem to earn a rather horrible nickname. Yet as all other suitors seemed to shy away in terror, there came a man to lead her to the dance floor. A dark, handsome, blur of a man.

Except for the steamy parts which I skipped ahead cause I like Romance but not to steamy which this was. The story itself was one of those filled with low self esteem with both the H&h but for me I didn’t mind too much. I laughed throughout the book. Narrator was good....tiny mystery was there but could be solved way before the end.

I wrote a review before but....
Reviewed: 10-07-19
“Somehow it disappeared” I thought my initial review was ok. I only stated why I didn’t care for the book. First the pros. I thought the love story between Jilly and Justin was good. Once Justin figured out his feelings he was all in no questions even with the brutality and tormented past Jilly had endured.
Now the cons: Spoilers moving on.....
So the first thing that irritated me was the tone the narrator took for Justin’s character. The narrator was quite good except for the tone he gave Justin. He made him sound like a ruffian, a brute, not a savy or sauvé tone of Romance, meh for me it was a turn off for the audio version. Otherwise the narrator was good.
Next if you don’t mind reading/listening about the most vile despicable villain or about brutal domestic violence and rape then by all means jump right in but Jilly’s husband was the thing that nightmares are made of and if there are people with characteristics like his then it’s probably one of the reasons capital punishment exists. What a vile character.
Finally and this is just my preference, I don’t like too many grey areas. The last few chapters would have been easier to swallow if the H/h didn’t knowingly move one with her still being legally attached to that monster of a man. It did all work out I’m end though.
So if you are ok with the above mentioned then it would be a good read for you.

Bayr of Saylok, bastard son of a powerful and jealous chieftain, is haunted by the curse once leveled by his dying mother. Bartered, abandoned, and rarely loved, she plagued the land with her words: From this day forward, there will be no daughters in Saylok. Raised among the Keepers at Temple Hill, Bayr is gifted with inhuman strength. But he’s also blessed with an all-too-human heart that beats with one purpose: to protect Alba, the first girl child born in nearly two decades and the salvation for a country at risk.

I like Harmon’s books I’ve read quit a few....
Reviewed: 09-08-19
This was different compared to Harmon’s other work. Her books can be a real tear jerkers but it’s usually tied up well in the end. This is Harmon with sort of a PN twist and I liked that she went there. You saw this slightly in her book the Law of Moses.
Since I’m big on Sci-fi and PN this drew me in. Mystical involved here included drawing symbols on the body to see and connect with others. Also creating curses. No chants or rituals. Only talk about drawing Ruins.
Huge spoiler (Stop now if you don’t like spoilers)
Biggest tear jerker is the death of a major character. Even to the end I expected that individual to come back physically. I mean you knew it was coming but my gosh.
I think my one con is that there were too many characters so I often forgot who or what clan each person came from and how they were initially introduced.
I’ve heard this narrator before and he’s ok but initially I thought him to be a drag and monotoned. Speeding up the narration helped.
I recommend if you don’t mind mystical or PN and are fans of Harmon’s work.

This series is no for me. The writing itself is very basic, writing for beginners. I almost DNF book 2 and I’m not getting book three even if book 2 ended in a sort of cliffhanger. I found that the only interesting character was Eren but the character still wasn’t enough to reel me in. Meh!!

I was not a fan but tried to finish what I started. If you are ok with possessions as in by spirits then FYI this book is full of it and makes light of the fact that a person can somehow handle being possessed. For me it also seemed to suggest that darkness/evil and light/good can mix.... It wasn’t for me.

Painfully slow.....
Reviewed: 08-21-19
This was painfully slow.... I mean I literally skipped through the first 10 chapters and this was after trying to get into it after putting the audio down several times. However, after some determination to finish I’m somewhat glad I did. I say somewhat because certain aspects of the story I was not thrilled with such as “possessions” which I really wouldn’t let my teens read. Besides that after getting into it I couldn’t put it down till the end. Not sure about finishing the series for me it’s a meh. I did enjoy the banter between the H&h.
