Story
In the best-selling tradition of Bill Bryson and Tony Horwitz, Rinker Buck's The Oregon Trail is a major work of participatory history: an epic account of traveling the entire 2,000-mile length of the Oregon Trail the old-fashioned way, in a covered wagon with a team of mules - which hasn't been done in a century - that also tells the rich history of the trail, the people who made the migration, and its significance to the country.

I had to quit listening

I would have enjoyed the story enough if it weren’t for all the profanity! How many times should an author drop the F bomb when describing his modern day wagon adventure? It was like listening to someone in a bar recount his story. Apparently he didn't have an editor worth their salt either.

Story
Millions of fans of Little House on the Prairie believe they know Laura Ingalls - the pioneer girl who survived blizzards and near-starvation on the Great Plains, and the woman who wrote the famous autobiographical books. But the true story of her life has never been fully told. Now, drawing on unpublished manuscripts, letters, diaries, and land and financial records, Caroline Fraser masterfully fills in the gaps in Wilder's biography.

Great background information, Some hard to hear things
Reviewed: 06-15-19
I am a lifelong fan of LH, and will continue to be. I don’t get offended by some statements in the books, as some do. I know the books were written long ago, and reflect the life and time of settlers in those days. I appreciate all the additional background information this book gives of things going on in America that helped to influence the lives of the Ingall’s and Wilder families. The negativity brought in will not change my love for these stories. Though I am afraid it may do that to some. Listening to this book actually prompted me to go online and order a hardcover set of the LH books, because I am afraid as much more time goes by, the books will be modified to make them more politically correct, and I will no longer be able to acquire the stories as written and published by Laura.

Story
In the Fall of 1918, eleven year-old Lydia Pierce and her fourteen year-old brother, Daniel, find themselves suddenly orphaned by the Spanish flu epidemic. Their grieving uncle takes them from their home in Portland, Maine to be raised in the Shaker community, where they are separated since males and females are not permitted to live together. Lydia, a fiercely independent girl, is forced to adjust to her new life and the restrictions placed upon her all on her own.

I knew nothing about the life of the shakers, so this was very enlightening. I appreciated the story, and the performance was very well done.
