These books take the extra steps to make the music within its pages come alive and the depth it adds is breathtaking.

The male actor does a great job. However the female actor chews through the lines like there's no tomorrow. She mispronounces words so many times, it's clearly not a mistake, she just didn't look up how to say them correctly. She also over acts her ass off. It's cool having both parts being read, but not at the expense of being taken out of the story.

The author leans into bad ideas from the last one

So at the very beginning of our tale, the author spends a decent amount of time going over bad reviews from the first book. He even makes the lead character apologize for calling dolphins flippant, in case any dolphins may be offended, right before proceeding to comment on ACTUAL reviews and mention that these people are clearly maladjusted and make no sense. While some reviews are out of place, many of them have some truth to them. The writer seems to revel in alt-right ramblings from his libertarian superman of a lead character. And while the first book had some redeeming qualities, and they warranted overlooking the authors clear bias, this entry into the series is one where the author actually leans into them even more.... it's a science fiction story where the author actually talks smack about people who believe in science, by saying they believe in quackery, among other things. The first story, while viewed through the angry eyes of it's creator, was at least a story. This one seems to simply be a mix of a blog post written from the POV of an 80s action movie actor. As I said in the review for the last one in the series that I finished (I couldn't make it through this one though), the author actually has talent and if he just focused on the story development and character building, he could deliver real gems. But, again, this is the same guy who created the Sad Puppies, a group focused on keeping women and People of Color from winning sci-fi awards.... so I'm not surprised. Oh, as usual, Baldwin is amazing. He's the only reason I hung on so long.

First off, there's definitely something here. But the story is far too short to build any real sense of suspense. Also, while I have zero problem with poking fun at my own beliefs (be it religious, political, etc) the author goes out of his way to hijack the momentum of the story to go off on tangents that come off as cheap shots rather genuine attempts at humor. The author founded an alt right group whose only goal is stop women and poc from getting nominated for sci fi literary awards, the Sad Puppies, so I'm not surprised by the cheap shots, it's just genuinely disappointing because he has actual talent for the medium and if he just focused on telling the best story instead of taking pot shots at people he sees as beneath him, the story could've been a genuinely good listen and I would even push for a Netflix show based on it...... As it stands, I would still watch the show but it would need to be a reimagining. I DO want to praise Adam Baldwin though, he freaking KILLED it. It was an outstanding performance and he deserves praise for it.

The story was great. A strong feminist read where the lead doesn't need saving and instead can handle whatever comes her way. At least that's the gist I got from it since the narrator choice made it almost impossible to listen to. She doesn't sound west coast, california girl at all..... as a matter of fact I had to check to see if it was Natasha Leggero reading because the narrator sounds like a stuck up east coast socialite. Sorry, I really wanted to like this but I had to delete after 5 chapters. I'll try reading it without the narration.

Je taime France. And I was so excited to see a novel take place there, but Natalie ruined this entire experience for me. She's an inexcusable asshat in this book. I almost quit halfway through.

First off, let me say that I have yet to be stumped by who the killer is. I treat it like a mental exercise. But more than that, I figure out exactly how they did it to the letter every time. This one is different, because while I knew the killer instantly upon them being introduced, the piece of evidence that nails them eluded me and was a great a-ha moment. Excellent job.

The book starts off well, but every time the author attempts to create new slang it's absolutely terrible and pulls you out of the story so completely that it frankly makes you lose any care you have about finishing the book.

Like so many serial killers of note, this title is utterly forgettable until it bashes you over the head. Most of the characters are unlikable and unredeemable, especially the lead. While the actors do the best with what they're given, they're simply not given enough to make a servicable story. The worst part though is those chapter breaks and tonal music stingers..... they're painful beyond belief. The saddest part is that there really is the beginnings of a decent story in here somewhere, but it's never given time enough to get fleshed out.
