Story
Blackbriar Academy is an enchanted school on a magical island, and everyone wants in. It’s a home away from home for the most advanced mages in the world - and only the absolute best of the best are given an invitation. By some freak accident, I managed to get one. If I pass the trials, I get to stay. With nowhere else to go, Blackbriar is my one shot at having a real life, and I won’t let anyone take this from me. But there’s a catch. It turns out the people on this island are being trained to hunt the darkness - basically, they’re being trained to hunt me.

Cringeworthy
Reviewed: 12-05-22
20 year old school girl attends magic academy complete with preppy uniforms. The set up and setting would be more conducive to a YA book, but then the author wouldn't be able to include gratuitous but tepid sex scenes with multiple partners into the story. It's just so cringy.

Just so so

It's not a bad story, not really great either. But it really is less about Cory than it is a coming of age story of the young girl in his would be adoptive family.

Garth Nix brings to life an impossible world through text, and Allan Corduner breaths life into that world with his wonderful range and tone.
