Story
The Ramirez women of Staten Island orbit around absence. When thirteen‑year‑old middle child Ruthy disappeared after track practice without a trace, it left the family scarred and scrambling. One night, twelve years later, oldest sister Jessica spots a woman on her TV screen in Catfight, a raunchy reality show. She rushes to tell her younger sister, Nina: This woman's hair is dyed red, and she calls herself Ruby, but the beauty mark under her left eye is instantly recognizable. Could it be Ruthy, after all this time?

Lyrical, Lovely (not for a middle school classroom bookshelf)

I really enjoyed this book and the narration. I’m looking for books from the Latino/a perspective that I can have in my classroom (without getting fired), and this isn’t it, but it’s really lovely.

Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Ugh. It’s as though the author went to a bucket of possible tropes and issues, couldn’t decide which ones to use, and so dumped the whole thing in.
The amount of research that seems to have gone into this book is lacking. Just because one is an older more experienced author does not mean that one can simply rely on personal knowledge. The number of times that the characters’ authenticity was put in question by their inaccurate comments or statements is unfortunate.
Yes, the 50s were a terrible time for women and equal rights. Yes, it hasn’t completely disappeared or been fixed. It seems as though the author weakens her point by all the other elements she tries to include.
The finesse that an experienced author or a writer who extensively researches as they write is missing. How unfortunate.

I had to listen to this at a higher speed because the reader sounded like she was reading it to a primary classroom. I would have preferred to read it myself but was on a road-trip.
Good story. Perfect for middle schoolers to read for themselves.

Story
In the highly anticipated finale to the New York Times best-selling trilogy, dictators, prophets, and tensions rise. In a world that’s conquered death, will humanity finally be torn asunder by the immortal beings it created? Citra and Rowan have disappeared. Endura is gone. It seems like nothing stands between Scythe Goddard and absolute dominion over the world scythedom. With the silence of the Thunderhead and the reverberations of the Great Resonance still shaking the earth to its core, the question remains: Is there anyone left who can stop him?

I was ready to love this book as much as the first two, but it really fell flat. So disappointing.
