Story
Rome has fallen into darkness. Its legacy remains alive in Constantinople, whose leaders struggle to retain control. Yet famine, war, and an encroaching night leave the Eastern Empire towards ruin. Faint hope arises as a new dynasty ascends the throne of Caesar. Bearing witness to such events is Varus, a young Herulian slave to the aging yet powerful Justin, who unveils a bold plan held by two generations of Romans - to retake the West and reclaim their homeland.

Good story, a little over dramatic. Some awkward narration.
Reviewed: 07-05-24
Story is good, descriptions are mostly good, with some parts being a little over done in terms of dramatic predictable events. Also some of these parts were pretty unbelievable like a beautiful Shakespearean level speech about the virtues of Rome basically in the middle of a battle.
The most distracting though was the narrator - he is very dramatic sounding which is basically fine, you get used to it. What I couldn’t get used to was his odd reading where he pauses at the wrong times in sentences or emphasizes the wrong word, totally confusing a sentence in the process. He also seems to think the word “Yet” is a complete sentence because for example he will be like “The shield wall was about to break under the pressure of the attack. Yet! Varrus called his men to hold.” This happens probably 200 times.
Anyways, I enjoyed it but kept getting pulled out of the story by some of the odd narration I described.
