Story
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

I really enjoyed the story and the winding road it took me down. There were some tragic events and mysteries and a unique set of characters with a variety of complexities. It’s a story of tragedy, grace, philosophical differences, family, and much more. Definitely recommend.

Story
It's been seven years since Chelsea Martin embarked on her yearlong postcollege European adventure. Since then, she's lost her mother to cancer and watched her sister marry twice, while Chelsea has become one of the most talented fundraisers for the American Cancer Coalition, and with the exception of one annoyingly competent coworker, Jason, her status as most successful moneymaker is unquestioned. Then Chelsea is forced to acknowledge that her life stopped after her mother died and that the last time she can remember being happy, in love, or enjoying her life was on her year abroad.

Story
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Good book - terrible narration!
Reviewed: 06-19-23
I wish I would not have listened on Audible. The narrator was so out of sync, grouping words together in ways that didn’t create emphasis or created the wrong emphasis, her voice trailed off to nothing at times, and would peak at other times when it shouldn’t have. It sounded like she had never read the book before. There were chapters when I was so completely frustrated I wanted to stop listening. There were a couple chapters where she seemed to be on target, but for most of the book the narration was awful. This was a great story, but I feel I would’ve enjoyed it more if I had read the book instead of listened on Audible.

I loved the story, and the narration. I enjoyed the original story line and the way the book was written, with each chapter rotating between past and present. Although it is a story about a tragedy, it’s not depressing!
