We are so fragile! This story depicts humanity quite well
Reviewed: 04-22-24
This story is depressing, sad, tear jerking, and it will make you dislike a character for her attitude and hautiness.
BUT it's a darn good story.
We as humans have emotions, very heavy emotions. Our emotions often guide our reasoning and control the way we think. This story show cases that flaw in our species.
The end of the story is sad and depressing. However, it also allows you to realize that some people are so inherently good! We all need that good. Sometimes, we don't know that we need it until we are struggling with our grief, our pain, our emotions. We need more good. And more importantly, we can be the good. We can be exactly what our fellow humans need.
If you're reading this, smile at the next person you see and ask them sincerely, HOWS IT GOING?
Then let them talk.... and just listen.

Wow! Where do I start?
Voice acting was so great!
I think this is my new favorite type of audio book!
The story was clever, engaging, heart pounding, eye opening, plot twisting, truly it was all there.
This was such an amazing ride, I wanted more every time I had to stop listening.
It was honestly thrilling to drive to work and back because of this amazing story!

Story
Fourteen-year-old Ozzy lives near Portland, Oregon, and is desperate for help. His scientist parents have been kidnapped after discovering a formula that enables mind control. Their work was so top secret that Ozzy is afraid to go to the police, but without help, he fears he'll never find his parents. Then he stumbles across a classified ad in the local newspaper that says "Wizard for Hire. Call 555-SPEL." Ozzy has read about wizards in books like Harry Potter, but wizards couldn't exist today, could they? After Ozzy meets the wizard Labyrinth - a.k.a. Rin - he's even more skeptical.

A "wizard" in our reality
Reviewed: 01-18-24
This is a well written story.
It grabs you from the first chapter and doesn't need to constantly remind you why you are still listening.
The wizard really is not what you expect after reading so many fantasy stories. This is fiction, but it's not fantasy.
The story is set in our reality, so it's easy to understand and visualize what is going on at each new scene.
The characters ate portrayed perfectly.
The narration is excellent! Kirby Hayborn is excellent behind the microphone
Admittedly, there are a couple of scenes that make you sigh in disappointment because the illusion of "Hollywood magic" makes its way in.
But in totality, the emotion that this story yields is impressive. It tickles all of the emotions and keeps you wanting more!

Story
This book begins in Denver. Planes fall from the sky, volcanic ash fills the air, and three people are stuck on the side of a mountain. How they survive the first few days and the steps they take can kill them, or not. Mistakes are made. Relationships tested. Unexpected twists and turns keep the listener engaged.

A scarily plausible future

This book was overall pretty good. It really had the potential to be great!
Excellent plot, strong characters and character development as well as adaptation.
A grave future lies ahead if this is how people will treat each other when the lights go out and don't come back one.
The story flows well and the hiccups and twists will keep you engaged.
The downfall comes at the end of the story. It felt rushed and abruptly ended. It was totally a bummer.
If there is a sequel, I will listen to it because there must be more to this story.
The narration was over all good, although it took several chapters to get used to.
The different tones used for each character were not that different and some were repeated for later characters which created an odd fiction that didn't feel correct at first.
However, you get used to it and the desire to finish the story overcomes.
