BEAUTIFUL
Reviewed: 06-13-25
This really is such a beautiful and rambling story. Defiantly worth the listen. There were a few times that I didn't really know what it was talking about but it is narrated so well that it was still pleasant to listen to. At times it feel like the author has gone off on a rabbit trail but most chapters make you think. Its so much more than just sci fi, its also a reflection on life and what it means to be little humans on a small world in a huge galaxy. And after you read the book, go watch the movie! Its really well done even if they had to change a few things.

Reviewed: 12-30-24
so far I have really enjoyed all of Liz Moore's books. this one does have some slow character development but somehow I still found it all intriguing. I love the way you feel like you really know and understand her characters. It's clean, interesting, surprising and bitter sweet. It could be called a coming of age story or even a family saga. It took me to some new places too. I'd definitely encourage anyone to give it a listen

this book kept me interested. A slightly moody vibe, so many well developed characters that you come to care about. a well written mystery novel that played like a movie in my head. I hope to read more books by this author. also I'd rate it PG-13, definitely several adult situations but thankfully no full out sex scenes which I appreciate.

this is not a "clean romance"
Reviewed: 07-19-24
I really wanted to like this book. it started very promisingly. Turns out to just be a lusty paper back romance wrapped nicely as historical fiction. I didn't finish it. I made it through 9 hours. There is more to the story than just lust but realistically (and I know we are here for the fiction, but still) these characters have no idea what love is. Just a warning, this is a lusty romance and not a wistful Bronte or Austin type of book. My apologies ti the fans of this author.

Story
Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

perhaps if you are a true fan...

Maybe if you are a die hard Stephen King fan you will love this book. I have been a fan as long as I can remember even though I often find at least a portion of many of his stories to be inappropriate or unsavory. I felt like Needful Things had an abundance of this sort thing. I did stay interested and I wanted to see what happened. Allen P. is a great character and I wanted to see what happened to him and in that respect this book did not disappoint. I wanted more of his story line and less of the other storylines. The voice actor was perfect for this book and did a great job. That was my personal take on it. Just not my favorite Stephen King book.

There is so much to this story. I let myself get drawn into the world created in this book. It is a very intricate story but also an easy read (listen). There is a pretty long character list and the different voice actors helped. I feel like this book is for sci-fi, what LOTR is for fantasy.

Some places seem too beautiful to be touched by horror. Summit Lake, nestled in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, is that kind of place. But two weeks ago, Becca Eckersley, a first-year law student and daughter of a powerful attorney, was brutally murdered there. Now the town is reeling with grief, and the police are baffled.
