This book is well written, clearly a subject known well by the author. A voice I never got sick of hearing and information that never stops causing me to think. I will probably listen to it a few times, but this next time I will take notes more intensely. Loved the book.

She was being raised by her father and grandfather when armed gunmen attacked their compound and the family decided to flee Mogadishu. They ended up in a refugee camp in Kenya, where Ilhan says she came to understand the deep meaning of hunger and death. Four years later, after a painstaking vetting process, her family achieved refugee status and arrived in Arlington, Virginia.

Cause I found the story to be absolutely fascinating call in the way in which she told it was such an eye-opener for a complacent American like me. I’ve become a huge fan of her life work. I grew to love her family through her storytelling. I will never forget this book and I will often think of the stories I’ve heard in her voice. Thank you so much for what must’ve been an extraordinary effort to put this information together. So well written, it’s as if I were back in time observing and seeing the stories right before my eyes. The book has transformed my entire understanding of slavery. I’m grateful for the good members of this family throughout the years and I’m also grateful for the labor and toil of each slave. I feel that this book goes along way to heal and apologize for what has occurred, Although clearly it could never be sufficient. Thank you.
