Magnus "Strath" Sutherland, laird of Dornoch, refuses to marry after being betrayed by his betrothed's father. Needing to distance himself from the Highlands, he accepts a commission at the Scottish border by the king, where he must squelch an English lord's plans to lay siege. What he finds is the Scots' enemy about to wed a most alluring English lass. What better way to torment his enemy than by defeating his army and stealing his beautiful bride?

Worst robotic-sounding narration
Reviewed: 02-20-22
The narration is awful and overshadows the mediocre storyline. It’s awful and I can’t believe any author would let such an unskilled voice to narrate their story. If multiple accents and voices too difficult, find another narrator. The pronunciation of basic words during character dialogue is painful.

Story
Amanda Knox spent four years in a foreign prison for a crime she did not commit. In the fall of 2007, the 20-year-old college coed left Seattle to study abroad in Italy, but her life was shattered when her roommate was murdered in their apartment. After a controversial trial, Amanda was convicted and imprisoned. But in 2011, an appeals court overturned the decision and vacated the murder charge. Free at last, she returned home to the U.S., where she has remained silent, until now.

Very powerful and moving memoir

I’m glad I took the time to hear Amanda tell her story, in her own words and voice. It’s an absolute tragedy that Meredith Kercher was killed, and the subsequent police actions compounded an already terrible situation. So many lives were impacted by actions outside of their control, and Amanda’s story respectfully touches on them all.

Beautifully written story of determination, courage, and perseverance. Narration was expertly done. Highly recommend and I can’t wait to listen to more books by both.

From Katherine St. John, author of The Lion's Den, comes another sublimely escapist thriller: When Hollywood heartthrob Cole Power hires his ex-wife, Stella Rivers, to act in his son's film, he sparks a firestorm on an isolated island that will unearth long-buried secrets - and unravel years of lies.

Great story, great performance

I bought this book after reading a review from The Tempest and I’m so glad I got to try a new-to-me author. The subject matter is powerful and relevant. The intersecting storylines, laid out over varying time frames, make you invest in the characters to see how they fair while also hoping for accountability to rain down on them.
I don’t normally enjoy audiobooks with multiple narrators, but this was a strong exception. The voices don’t interact with each other, but instead are used to differentiate between main character biographies. So very well done.

Story
Dublin, 1962. Within the gated grounds of the convent of the Sisters of the Holy Redemption lies one of the city's Magdalen Laundries. Once places of refuge, the laundries have evolved into grim workhouses. Some inmates are "fallen" women - unwed mothers, prostitutes, or petty criminals. Most are ordinary girls whose only sin lies in being too pretty, too independent, or tempting the wrong man. Among them is 16-year-old Teagan Tiernan, sent by her family when her beauty provokes a lustful revelation from a young priest.

Good narration of an unoriginal story

Couldn’t help but think this was rewrite of the movie, The Magdalene Sisters, with a hastily thrown together new element here or there for differentiation. Was disappointed to miss an opportunity learn more about the conditions, rules, and histories of some of the women and girls that were sent to the laundries.
