it's not really but it feels that way. Chuck's always got a good story to tell with well crafted characters and an intriguing and thrilling plot!

I didn't know what to expect from this and was blown away as it wound on. A chilling, Gothic story lifted and dropped into Mexico, but still its own tale. I will gladly recommend it to anyone.

My only issue with the audiobook isn't the story it's the performance. the narrator has a whistle on pronouncing SH sounds like in She and broke immersion for me.

I love Kate Mulgrew's readings. She has a good grasp of the characters, their voices and the tone of the story. If you came expecting a rehash of the tv show you're in for some surprises.

I loved the Netflix show and knew the book had to be better. I found it comparable. Not much was changed from page to screen save for a little order and some creative decisions. I loved it just as much as I loved the show.

However, both the show and Mr. Tevis failed to do what seemed obvious to me... drive home some really poignant themes. Instead both moved close to them, briefly touched them and when nearing a satisfying move switched out at the last moment. It's a shame, but overall the story is enjoyable.

I loved the Poppy War from the first few sentences. Rin's journey was an eye opening, fun ride to experience. a devastating life to witness and a conflicted ending. Characters, plot and writing are all very tight... until the end. That's where it faltered slightly. Kuang does a masterful job telling her story, she just has a Kerri Strug moment at the end.

A Good Premise, But Poorly Executed

The idea of this story is a fun one. It has all the makings of something truly gripping and entertaining. Unfortunately, the author chose to skimp on building the characters and focused more on hitting specific scenes that in the end were poorly executed.

The main character Christopher is a cardboard cut out of a protagonist whose sole motivation stems from his father's love of carnivals. He's dragged by the nose, or stumbles through illogical decisions to reach and ending that could have been carried out by any one of the other characters.

The best character in the story is the antagonist, and he is left to meager ideas, and guesses as to his motivation by secondary characters, the protagonist barely scratches what was supposed to be his foil's surface.

In the end it's a jarring, jaunty path from a forced beginning to an ending that is unsatisfying.

Had never heard of this novel until I was doing research on ghosts and carnivals. pleasantly surprised by the back-to-basics King style and the small, character driven plot. As always it was a fun little thrill ride with all of the curves and jumps neatly laid out.

My only criticism is the missed opportunity to foreshadow the car trouble that happens at the end.
