Story
At forty, Peter, an asylum lawyer in New York City, is overworked and isolated. He spends his days immersed in the struggles of immigrants only to return to an empty apartment and occasional hook-ups with a man who wants more than Peter can give. But when the asylum case of a young gay man pierces Peter's numbness, the event that he has avoided for twenty years returns to haunt him. Ann, his mother, who runs a women's retreat center she founded after leaving his father, is wounded by the estrangement from Peter but cherishes the world she has built.

Not my cup of tea
Reviewed: 04-20-25
I was looking for a story about mothers and sons. This is not it. This is a story about a very unhappy, troubled gay man and his lesbian mother. Lots of gay sex so beware if that’s not your jam.

Story
Where does one go, you might ask, when the world falls apart? When the immutable facts of your life—the mundane, the trivial, the take-for-granted minutiae that once filled every second of every day—suddenly disappear? Where does one go in such dire and unexpected circumstances? I went home, of course.

Story
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

The worst narration ever
Reviewed: 10-11-24
This is a sweet, albeit schmaltzy and far fetched, story. It would have been much more enjoyable had I read the real book instead of suffering through truly the worst narration I’ve ever come across. Mispronounced words, TERRIBLE voices for the children characters, and the wrong tone for such a tender story. Whatever you do, don’t listen to the audio version of this one.

Anne Lamott writes about faith, family, and community in essays that are both wise and irreverent. It's an approach that has become her trademark. Now in Small Victories, Lamott offers a new message of hope that celebrates the triumph of light over the darkness in our lives. Our victories over hardship and pain may seem small, she writes, but they change us - our perceptions, our perspectives, and our lives.

She makes me laugh out loud sometimes but also fills me with nuggets of wisdom and hope. And somehow her monotone, dry delivery is perfect for her work. This book is 10 years old. I’m guessing George Bush doesn’t look so bad to her after almost a decade of the despicable Donald Trump.
