Story
Valora Luck has two things: a ticket for the biggest and most luxurious ocean liner in the world, and a dream of leaving England behind and making a life for herself as a circus performer in New York. Much to her surprise though, she's turned away at the gangway; apparently, Chinese aren't allowed into America. But Val has to get on that ship. Her twin brother, Jamie, who has spent two long years at sea, is there, as is an influential circus owner, whom Val hopes to audition for. Thankfully, there's not much a trained acrobat like Val can't overcome when she puts her mind to it.

Even though I know how Titanic ends, I was still unprepared. Loved the gutsy heroine.

Story
Sometimes love is right under your nose. As one of only two aromateurs left on the planet, 16-year-old Mimosa knows what her future holds: a lifetime of weeding, mixing love elixirs, and matchmaking - all while remaining incurably alone. For Mim, the rules are clear: falling in love would render her nose useless, taking away her one great talent. But when she accidentally gives an elixir to the wrong woman and has to rely on the lovesick woman's son, the school soccer star, to help fix the situation, Mim quickly begins to realize that falling in love isn't always a choice you can make.

Mimosa is an 'aromateur,' a love witch who makes potions with her mother based on their extraordinarily sensitive noses. She had been homeschooled all her life, because making these love potions is an ancient and dying art that takes up most of her time. She convinces her mom to let her attend real high school on the condition that her work as an aromateur will not suffer. But then Mimosa accidentally mixes up her love potions and gives a dose meant for the school librarian to the mother of the hot soccer star. Oh yeah, she also does the one thing she is not supposed to do -- fall in love. I LOVE THIS BOOK. It was so quirky and honest and funny and magical and go read/listen to it now.

Loved this story, about a Chinese girl in 1906 San Francisco who impersonates an heiress to get into an all white school, but then the historic SF earthquake hits, shaking up all her plans. Mercy Wong is fierce, lovable, hilarious, someone to root for, and cry with. If you enjoy stories with strong female friendships, listen to this one. The narrator does an excellent job; love her accents, pacing and voice acting. A perfect read.

Would you consider the audio edition of Under a Painted Sky to be better than the print version?
The print version was excellent. The audio book adds a wonderful dimension b/c the narrator does the accents so well. Loved it.
What did you like best about this story?
The friendships, the slow burn romance, the tension to the very end.
Which character – as performed by Emily Woo Zeller – was your favorite?
Samantha, the main character. She also did an amazing job with the Scottish brothers.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
YES
Any additional comments?
I cried so many times during this story; it was so good from start to finish. Awesome job. Now I'll go listen to it again.
