Story
The Year of the Pitcher is the story of the remarkable 1968 baseball season, which culminated in one of the greatest World Series contests ever, with the Detroit Tigers coming back from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Cardinals in Game Seven of the World Series. In 1968, two remarkable pitchers would dominate the game as well as the broadsheets. One was black, the other white. Bob Gibson, together with the St. Louis Cardinals, embodied an entire generation's hope for integration at a heated moment in American history. Denny McLain, his adversary, was a crass self-promoter.

What I absolutely love about this book is that it goes beyond baseball data. It is a wonderful storyline about the amazing pitchers and players who played this game in the late 60s and early 70s. Most of the focus was on the 1968 season and the 1968 World Series. These guys were clearly not one dimensional figures. And all of this great baseball playing was taken place during a very turbulent time in our country’s history. It allowed me to put myself in the shoes of those who played this game. I got a glimpse of the ups and downs of these players and their day. I felt an attachment to them and their world. This book would also be appreciated by those who are not baseball fans. The writer is a wonderful storyteller.

A chilling exposé of corporate corruption and government cover-ups, this account of a nationwide child-trafficking and pedophilia ring in the United States tells a sordid tale of corruption in high places. The scandal originally surfaced during an investigation into Omaha, Nebraska's failed Franklin Federal Credit Union that went beyond the Midwest, ultimately to Washington, DC.

This book helped me to understand why the government often doesn’t act in the interest of its people. It sheds light on how those who are drunk on power and profit will do anything they can to maintain what they have even at the expense of abusing children. It tell a dark truth about about the hidden hands that govern decision and it offers an explanation as to why our institutions are compromised when it comes to protecting children. It is a must read for those who seek to understand why so many bad decisions are made thus leaving our society vulnerable on many levels. This is a must read for those who seek to understand how governments and institutions work or fail to work. It is written in a way that offers real insight to the reader.
