Story
With Frye as our raconteur-guide, we journey back to a time before barriers of brick and stone even existed - to an era in which nomadic tribes vied for scarce resources, and each man was bred to a life of struggle. Ultimately, those same men would create edifices of mud, brick, and stone and with them effectively divide humanity: On one side were those the walls protected; on the other, those the walls kept out. The stars of this narrative are the walls themselves - rising up in places as ancient and exotic as Mesopotamia, Babylon, Greece, China, Rome, Mongolia, Afghanistan, the lower Mississippi, and even Central America....

They did a great job bringing a classic story to life. I hope they have this crew working on another. I'd like to hear them do Mark Twain's " Roughing it"

Story
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

The difinintive audio version of a classic. I was laughing out loud in some parts. Mr. Twain himself would enjoy this reading.

Story
The word "barbarian" quickly conjures images of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan. Yet few people realize these men belong to a succession of nomadic warriors who emerged from the Eurasian steppes to conquer civilizations. It's a part of ancient and medieval history that's often overlooked, but for an accurate view of how the world evolved, it's essential. Covering some 6,000 miles and 6,000 years, this eye-opening course illuminates how a series of groups pushed ever westward, coming into contact with the Roman Empire, Han China, and distant cultures from Iraq to India.

One of my all time favorites. Your understanding of the modern world will be greatly deepened. The nomads were pot smokers who drank from the skulls of their enemies, and terrorized settled societies for thousands of years until the 1500's. The first couple of lectures, like most Great Courses, are the necessary setup and can be a bit dry. Then things really get moving. Professor Harl has delivered a really great course.

Thoroughly enjoyable brain food. There are chapters you'll listen to multiple times because this is really enjoyable stuff to think about, and it rewards careful though. As usual Professor Carroll is engaging and a pleasure to spend time with. He makes challenging concepts clear and removes the intimidating mathematics that usually accompany them. You'll walk away with a new model of the world in your mental toolbox. If you choose to go deeper and into the mathematics you will be starting with a solid conceptual framework

Would you like to know how the universe works? Scientists have been asking that question for a long time and have found that many of the answers can be found in the study of particle physics, the field that focuses on those impossibly tiny particles with unbelievably strange names - the hadrons and leptons, baryons and mesons, muons and gluons - so mystifying to the rest of us.

Excellent Intro to a Tough Subject

I have listened to this multiple times. Particle physics is a tough field to digest and it rewards taking some time to really think about it. This course will give you a solid understanding of it. Professor Pollock is a great teacher. He clearly has a passion for and deep knowledge of the subject. He speaks clearly, moves at a good pace. and has a pleasant voice. To go deeper check out the other Great Courses on the Higgs, Time, and The Theory of Everything.
