Flavia de Luce has taken on the mentorship of her odious moon-faced cousin Undine, who has come to live at Buckshaw following the death of her mother. Undine’s main talent, aside from cultivating disgusting habits, seems to be raising Flavia’s hackles, although in her best moments she shows potential for trespassing, trickery, and other assorted mayhem. When Major Greyleigh, a local recluse and former hangman, is found dead after a breakfast of poisonous mushrooms, suspicion falls on the de Luce family’s longtime cook, Mrs. Mullet.

I enjoyed every book in this series but especially this one. The author has an uncanny ability to make me care about his characters with a less is more approach and a great sense of humor. The narrator is also a genius. Thoroughly enjoyable, I can’t wait for another!

Long and rambling with unbelievable characters, this book is a hodge podge of look at me, look at me what a clever writer I am by the author. Irritating and ultimately disappointing in the extreme.

Story
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

It just seems so overwrought and reaching for some kind of genius that is currently beyond the author. She spends so much time on the mystical side of her protagonist that she forgets to make her alive or real or deserving of sympathy. Hollow but with all the trimmings. Enjoyable if disappointing eventually.

Reviewed: 10-13-23
I have bound copies of almost all of Helprin’s books. I was so looking forward to listening to this one. Helprin’s magic doesn’t translate to modern day in my opinion, his misogyny and pedantic characters nagged at my enjoyment through out the story. This book reminds me of Atlas Shrugged, romantic with a great turn of phrase on the surface but corrupt on closer examination. I highly recommend his earlier work.

Story
The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.
