AI is getting better. The phrasing and voice tone is much more natural sounding. More natural, but not good enough to improve a mediocre story. I didn’t finish the book because I just didn’t care enough about the characters or the plot.

At the end of the fifth episode of this year’s season of Game of Thrones, Aryia is rescued from the burning city of King’s a Landing by a white horse. So what could I do but reread the tales of Valdemar? I had no doubt at all that her Companion had found her and she was on her way to the Heralds’ Collegium. Most of these books have aged well since I last read them. This is the exception. I’m too old for the teenaged sense of power and importance so that everything g that goes wrong is their fault. “I’m such a bad person” “You’re all better off without my presence tainting everything with evil”. The basic plot line is OK, but there’s just too much angst.

This book reminds me of the zany romantic comedies from the 30s & 40s. Bizarre situations, odd people, unlikely occurrences and hilarious! When you're in the mood for s good listen that is light and funny, this series is for you.

I grew up reading science fiction. Recently, I've started rereading some of my old favorites. This one has aged very well. I'm a little annoyed that there are no important female characters, but I can deal with that. When I recently reread Stranger in a Strange Land, I was appalled at how sexist and racist it was. Once a favorite, I couldn't even get through the entire thing. Foundation, however, is still a good read. I bought it as a daily special, and now find I'll have to buy the entire series to read again. Smart move Audible. Smart move.

Raised in New Jersey, I now live in Arizona. These books bring back happy childhood memories of going down the shore with the family. Salt water taffy, miniature golf, fresh seafood. These books are great reading for when I want some light reading, engaging but not overly complex. A good book to take to the beach.

Some Heinlein just doesn't age well

I grew up reading Robert Heinlein and enjoyed everything of his that I ever read. Somehow this slipped past me and this is the first time I've read this one. So, with the soft glow of youthful memories not present to cushion my reading experience, I was smacked in the face with his racism, sexism, and xenophobia. Fifty or sixty years ago, when I was discovering his worlds for the first time, that was pretty much what all of America was like. Boy have things changed! (For another good example of social changes, read one of the original Bobsey Twins books, not the ones rewritten in the sixties and seventies, one of the originals from the first half of the twentieth century).

This was not one of his best to begin with. That's probably why this is my first encounter with this book. Do not let this be your first Heinlein book. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress has stood the test of time better than some others (Stranger in a Strange Land). Start there and let this one Rest In Peace.

Enjoyable series, irritating main character

I really enjoy this series: backstage at the White House, the running of a professional kitchen, lightweight murder mysteries. Ollie is a smart, talented professional chief who notices things. While running a busy kitchen serving food to some of the most important people in the world, she just happens to stumble onto clues that lead to the solutions to various plots and mysteries.

While I enjoy this series of books enough to overlook most of the many holes in the plot, I have lots of trouble with the holes in Ollie's character. She is so often unable to talk in stressful situations that I want to smack her! When she does speak under stress, she says the wrong things in the worst way possible. If she decides to tell someone in authority about some clue, she minimizes the important part or leaves it out entirely. Maybe I'm not all that willing to overlook plot holes after all.

But I love the narration, the stories are easy listening, not too complicated, and fun. Give them a try.

The basic idea of mysteries in the White House kitchen is good. Many of the characters are engaging. The main character is, however, almost schizophrenic in the way she swings from calm, organized professional to ditzy girl who can't string words into a coherent sentence. The ditz makes really stupid decisions that only serve to create false tensions in the plot. I'll give this author one more try and hope that her editor is tougher on her in the future.

There are plot holes large enough for my mastiff to frolic in. Although much of the story involves the inner workings of a large metropolitan medical center, I wonder of the author has ever even visited a hospital. But I liked it anyway. The characters and their relationships appealed to me. The narrator was very good. Give it a shot.

I think this may be the author's first book, right now it's the only one she has on Audible. It jumps around and is a little choppy in places. But it has a good plot, interesting, well developed characters, and a few surprises.i will look forward to watching this author develop.
