Story
After his father's heart attack in 1984, Peter Godwin began a series of pilgrimages back to Zimbabwe, the land of his birth, from Manhattan, where he now lives. On these frequent visits to check on his elderly parents, he bore witness to Zimbabwe's dramatic spiral downward into the jaws of violent chaos, presided over by an increasingly enraged dictator. And yet long after their comfortable lifestyle had been shattered and millions were fleeing, his parents refuse to leave, steadfast in their allegiance to the failed state that has been their adopted home for 50 years.

A compelling Tale of Africa
Reviewed: 04-14-25
This is the third book that I have read of Peter Godwin. He is a masterful storyteller, and does a great job of narrating his own work. This is a story, not simply of a family in Africa, but a tale of a country being driven to ruin by Robert Mugabe. This is a story of family and relationships. It’s also a story of the holocaust, as Pieter’s father was a Polish Jew, who fought against the Nazis from Great Britain ended up, marrying his physician, wife and settling to raise a family and what was Rhodesia and became Zimbabwe. I I highly recommend this book. And look forward to reading other books by Peter Godwin.

Jane Bertch’s autobiographical tale of a woman from the Midwest falling in love with “the city of light” and making the decision to move there and work in banking, only to leave that career behind to start her own business to show people how to cook famous French dishes. As somebody who studied in France, a couple of times, I very much appreciated. This book I highly recommend it.

Story
Until the 1970s, if you suffered a medical crisis, your chances of survival were minimal. A 9-1-1 call might bring police or even the local funeral home. But that all changed with Freedom House EMS in Pittsburgh, a group of Black men who became America’s first paramedics and set the gold standard for emergency medicine around the world, only to have their story and their legacy erased—until now.

The story of the Freedom house in Pittsburgh and what they were able to accomplish as the first truly professional emergency medical service in the United States with an all black crew, is inspirational. Unfortunately, institutional racism in the city of Pittsburgh led to its demise. Mr Hazzards gripping and fascinating book tells their much neglected story. I’m a nurse, a former Air Force medic, and a former army nurse.. anybody who has ever worked an emergency, stands on the backs of the ground breaking work done by freedom house. This is simply an excellent book, and the narrator did an exceptional job.

One plucky Nurse

I have a great deal in common with this author. We are both from Minnesota, we are both nurses and we both were in the United States Army Nurse Corps the separation is that she served as a combat nurse during Vietnam . Her compelling story of working as a combat nurse, trying to deal with the post traumatic stress she suffered from that experience, and her struggle to work on getting the Vietnam women’s memorial up in Washington DC is quite the story. I highly recommend this book.

Story
John Blake grew up in a Black neighborhood in inner-city Baltimore that became the setting for the HBO series The Wire. There he became a self-described “closeted biracial person,” hostile toward white people while hiding the truth of his mother’s race. The son of a Black man and a white woman who met when interracial marriage was still illegal, Blake knew this much about his mother: She vanished from his life not long after his birth, and her family rejected him because of his race. But at the age of seventeen, Blake had a surprise encounter that uncovered a disturbing family secret.

Before 9/11, the rugby team at West Point learned to bond on a sports field. This is what happened when those fifteen young men became leaders in war. Filled with drama, tragedy, and personal transformations, this is the story of a unique brotherhood. It is a story of American rugby and a story of the U.S. Army created through intimate portraits of men shaped by West Point's motto: "Duty, Honor, Country."

I’ve been a registered nurse for over 34 years, but I’m also an Air Force medic veteran, as well as being a veteran of the army reserve Nurse Corps. This is simply an incredible bit of storytelling and highlights the forgotten role that women played during the war in Vietnam. It took a long time for the women to get their own monument on the mall in Washington DC. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Story
In unforgettable tales of innocence lost under African skies, we follow Godwin's awakening to the often savage struggle between Whites and Blacks, his horror when he is forced to fight in a civil war he detests, and his experiences as a journalist covering the country's violent transition to Black rule as Rhodesia's colonial era comes to an end and the new state of Zimbabwe is born from its bloody ashes. Mukiwa is a poignant, compelling memoir and an invaluable addition to the literature of southern Africa.

There is only one Wright Thompson. He is, as they say, famous if you know who he is: his work includes the most-read articles in the history of ESPN (and it's not even close) and has been anthologized in the Best American Sports Writing series ten times, and he counts John Grisham and Richard Ford among his ardent admirers. But to say his pieces are about sports, while true as far as it goes, is like saying Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove is a book about a cattle drive.
