Story
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

The ending was not it.

The beginning of the book starts off so good, setting up the detectives, getting into their lives. the entire time I felt bad for Ryan, so you can see why the ending was absolute crap. He lost EVERYTHING because he was gullible in one moment. tearing apart the 2 best friends/partners and them never speaking again was in many ways the worst part.
I would of never read the book if I knew detective Ryan would be alone, in the woods as he was in the beginning as a boy.

Story
Bridie Devine - flame-haired, pipe-smoking detective extraordinaire - is confronted with the most baffling puzzle yet: the kidnapping of Christabel Berwick, secret daughter of Sir Edmund Athelstan Berwick, and a peculiar child whose reputed supernatural powers have captured the unwanted attention of collectors in this age of discovery. Winding her way through the sooty streets of Victorian London, Bridie won’t rest until she finds the young girl, even if it means unearthing secrets about her past that she’d rather keep buried.

Cute book, time lines jump around alot, you have to pay attention to the years and who the story is about. I wouldn't read it again but I am glad I did.
