Story
The Dynize have unlocked the Landfall Godstone, and Michel Bravis is tasked with returning to Greenfire Depths to do whatever he can to prevent them from using its power: from sewing dissension among the enemy ranks to rallying the Palo population. Ben Styke's invasion of Dynize is curtailed when a storm scatters his fleet. Coming ashore with just 20 lancers, he is forced to rely on brains rather than brawn - gaining new allies in a strange land on the cusp of its own internal violence.

So I’m a fan of ACoTaR, and I’d heard that this one was amazing, however I thought this book had a horrible beginning. It’s slow, and the dialogue sounds like every character wants to be an edge lord, with way too much cursing what felt like every other sentence. I feel like there’s some plot conveniences, and the pacing was a bit off to me towards the end.
The book does improve a bit about half through, but I was still overall disappointed, cause it read like a first draft.

Since time immemorial the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace. Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy's shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels.

Story
Jade, the mysterious and magical substance once exclusive to the Green Bone warriors of Kekon, is now coveted throughout the world. Everyone wants access to the supernatural abilities it provides, from traditional forces such as governments, mercenaries, and criminal kingpins, to modern players, including doctors, athletes, and movie studios. As the struggle over the control of jade grows ever larger and more deadly, the Kaul family, and the ancient ways of the Kekonese Green Bones, will never be the same.

My take on book 3
Reviewed: 06-29-22
I personally didn't enjoy this one on the same level I did book 1 or 2. That's not to say, it's not a good read, I just felt compared to it's first two installments, that Jade Legacy comes across as too slow in a lot of parts. I didn't care for the time skips all that much because sometimes it felt like it would build tension for a particular plot point, only to kill it with the time skip. I also didn't find the next generation of the Khal family as compelling, but I think I'm a little bias, since you get to spend so much time with their parents in books 1 and 2. The writing style itself is still great, I love the descriptions and Fonda Lee's voice. I love the setting and the world building, just didn't care for the pacing.

Kell is one of the last Travelers - magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes. As such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. There's White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.

This is fantastic! I love everything about it. I loved the vaguely steampunk- (ish)/1910s sort of world. I love the main characters. The magic system leaves you with questions in the best way, and gives you just enough to pull you to the next chapter. I loved the narration, which in my opinion is better than the narration of the second book.

I really haven't read a ton of single novellas, so this was a first for me with this book. I liked the main character, because I am always in the mood for a battle tested leading lady. I like the idea of the romance, but it just wasn't for me personally? It seemed a little forced at times as far as chemistry between the main girl and guy, but it hardly ruins anything. I enjoyed the easy to understand village vs village drama that's driving the plot forward. I liked the battle scenes over all, but there could have been more of them. Beautifully written and excellent narration by Khristine Hvam.

Excellent, family driven plot

This book has become one of my favorites. I love the detail specific to martial training that you really only appreciate if you've done a martial arts class of some kind, like Fonda Lee has. If you like samurai culture/history, you'll love the fight scenes and the magic system.
The main three siblings have a wonderfully reliable dynamic among them which becomes more an more complicated and flushed out as you go into book two.
One brother is thrust into a position he didn't want, while the other is forced to deal with the situation he has to the best of his ability. Meanwhile, their sister is a great exercise in "trying to find your place in the world" arch, which I think is super believable and realistic. Lee is great at hitting the nuances of being a woman in a man's world, without making it feel overly idealized or undervalued.
As someone raised in western culture, this book/series feels so fresh with it's obviously eastern perspective. It's so refreshing to see a non-European fantasy world that's so flushed out. The magic system is easy to understand, yet unique. The world the characters live in feels so real and vibrant. I love how simple the magic system is, yet the effects of it on the world is so wonderfully complex. Lee does a fantastic job of not breaking the rules she sets up in the world, once established. Truly, an entertaining read.

Beyond Kekon's borders, war is brewing. Powerful foreign governments and mercenary criminal kingpins alike turn their eyes on the island nation. Jade, Kekon's most prized resource, could make them rich - or give them the edge they'd need to topple their rivals.

The only thing that was eh, was how slow this one felt in the middle but the pay off was worth it. Lee has a great talent for building the tension of power politics. If you liked Jade City, this is a great sequel.
