I’m having a hard time understanding the critical acclaim that this received. I suppose her writing style is good, but the subject is - well, I’m not sure what her subject or point is. I am a physician and there are some wild medical and health care system situations in this book which lead me to believe she doesn’t have a real knowledge of what she is writing about.

Started off as literature, then devolved to pulp fiction. More rich beginning, then it turned into Crazy Rich Asians. Interesting historical setting.

Overlong, melodramatic, way too much “description” of setting. Started off promising and steadily deteriorated. Possibly could have been better if there had been no reference to Shakespeare, but then again maybe not - would likely have been similarly uninteresting.

Narration was distracting

Interesting story, however unfortunately perhaps not as rich in detail as might have been desired. Due primarily of course, to the reticence of Virginia herself to have provided source material. Terribly distracting to the story was the narrator, particularly her interpretation of what an American accent should sound like and insisting on switching to this (southern-Texan hybrid drawl) quite abruptly during the story.

Lovely prose, usually. A bit overwrought at times. Sad tale of an over-privileged yet under-insightful woman’s naive and self-centered journey to unsuccessfully find meaning in a life paralyzed by an inability to engage. The latter possibly the result of growing up the only child of a bipolar, magnetic, domineering mother.

Good research. Interesting history that I wasn’t aware of, but sometimes too much detail. Since Philbrick used (and credited) so many historical sources, I expected a more academic, nuanced take. However, I found instead that the author seemed rather opinionated and to have drawn conclusions about individual’s motives and mental states that could only be conjectures.

For the most part a compelling and well told story. The unfolding narrative allows for an interesting look at several issues regarding reproductive rights. However, while feigning initially to be sympathetic to various views, the author’s biases results in a progressive reduction of the dimensionality of the characters, and a feeling that ultimately it could have been much better.
