Story
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Captivating!
Reviewed: 09-04-21
I know that some people just think that the story was depressing. However, it’s really a story about the struggles that women endured and how strong this generation of Americans were.
I would never give an excellent book (like this one) a one star review simply because it deals with hardship. In the vein of The Grapes Of Wrath from the perspective of women.
I highly recommend this book and have shared with a young woman who has been through a lot herself.

Story
Moving, harrowing, and ultimately uplifting, Lori Schiller's memoir is a classic testimony to the ravages of mental illness and the power of perseverance and courage. At 17, Lori Schiller was the perfect child - the only daughter of an affluent, close-knit family. Six years later she made her first suicide attempt, then wandered the streets of New York City dressed in ragged clothes, tormenting voices crying out in her mind. Lori Schiller had entered the horrifying world of full-blown schizophrenia.

Five hundred years before the birth of Jesus, a God-realized being named Lao-tzu in ancient China dictated 81 verses, which are regarded by many as the ultimate commentary on the nature of our existence. The classic text of these 81 verses, called the Tao Te Ching or the Great Way, offers advice and guidance that is balanced, moral, spiritual, and always concerned with working for the good.

Story
America, says Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Chris Hedges, is convulsed by an array of pathologies that have arisen out of profound hopelessness, a bitter despair and a civil society that has ceased to function. The opioid crisis, the retreat into gambling to cope with economic distress, the pornification of culture, the rise of magical thinking, the celebration of sadism, hate, and plagues of suicides are the physical manifestations of a society that is being ravaged by corporate pillage and a failed democracy. All these ills presage a frightening reconfiguration of the nation and the planet.

Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh-out-loud funny, A Dog's Purpose is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog's many lives, but also a dog's-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man's best friend. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose.

A beautiful story filled with love. I didn’t expect this book to be as enlightening as it is. I was amazed by the incredible insight into the dog’s realities.
If you’re a dog lover, this book is a must! I was hesitant to listen because I thought it might be too sad. However, it is much more complex than I expected.
Once I started listening it just drew me in and I finished it within a few days. The most intense story I have heard in quite some time. I laughed, I cried and I actually gained some spiritual insight with understanding.
Absolutely wonderful book that will not disappoint.

Story
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

I think 99.999% of the time a book is BETTER than a movie. However, the screen writer did such an excellent job with Forrest Gump the MOVIE that I actually liked the movie BETTER! Obviously there would be no movie without the book and this is a really great book.

Lacking in depth & although she is the author, Ms. Marshall does a C- at reading it (being generous here).
If id have known i could return a book before it was too late, THIS would be ONE of only two books I disliked this much.
