Great read
Reviewed: 01-18-23
I wanted to start to read science fiction since it’s not a genre I usually gravitate towards. ( unless it’s a Star Wars, Star Trek or Firefly book) Truthfully I didn’t know where to start so when I searched in audible science-fiction this was one of the first pop ups so I thought I’d listen to this and then read a few of the recommended books in the PDF that comes with the course. Being that I don’t know a lot about science fiction this was a really nice introduction for me into the genre. Gary Wolfe is an amazing speaker. I was worried the subject would go over my head but I didn’t feel that way at all. If anything this course made me really excited to start to read science fiction. I also liked learning about the different stories, I ended up finding a lot of them on audible and was able to add them to my library. I ended up reading 15 Stories that he lectures on in one month and I really enjoyed them some of them have even become part of my all-time favorite books.
Here is a list of a few of my new favorites
The Ones Who Walk Away From Omela by Ursula E Le Guin.
The John Carter series (read first three books) by Edgar Rice Burroughs
The Scarlet Plague by Jack London
The Machine Stops by Carey Mulligan

I thought it was a full cast at points he's so good at giving each character their own voice. Timothy Zahn is an amazing author. He really knows how to bring the Star Wars Universe to life!!

Story
Prince was a musical genius, one of the most beloved, accomplished, and acclaimed musicians of our time. The Beautiful Ones is the story of how Prince became Prince - a first-person account of a kid absorbing the world around him and then creating a persona, an artistic vision, and a life, before the hits and fame that would come to define him. This work is not just a tribute to an icon, but an original and energizing literary work in its own right, full of Prince’s ideas and vision, his voice and image - his undying gift to the world.

sad
Reviewed: 11-14-20
It's 3 hours. Almost 2 of those hours are about Dan Piepenbring's very brief meetings with Prince and his awkwardness in each meeting. He also says he didn't just want to write a book just to write a book and I feel like that's just what he did. He says he wanted to write something in Princes voice and I feel like he didn't accomplish that at all. Prince was an incredibly private person and he was known for keeping all work close to his chest until he felt it was perfect. I don't feel like Prince would have ever allowed something like this to be published especially with his name attached

Sophia Chang is a badass of the music industry. As the daughter of Korean immigrants in predominantly white suburban Vancouver, she grew up shunning the “model minority” myth. Armed with a fierce sense of independence, she moved to New York City and infiltrated the world of hip-hop, yet remained mostly in the shadows of the artists she supported. With her debut memoir, Sophia Chang is finally ready to grab the mic for herself.

Favorite book of 2019

I loved this book. Sophia Chang is not a name I will ever forget and I'm damn sure I'll make my daughter's know it too. She has had an incredible life with hardships but lots of love too. Usually I can't stand when an author narrates their own book but with her way with words I just can't picture anyone else doing this book justice. I loved that she had her friends and family come in to narrate a little part here and there it made for the most unique experience I've ever had with an audiobook. I will be recommending this book to all my friends.
