Story
Hilketa is a frenetic and violent pastime where players attack each other with swords and hammers. The main goal of the game: obtain your opponent's head and carry it through the goalposts. With flesh and bone bodies, a sport like this would be impossible. But all the players are "threeps", robot-like bodies controlled by people with Haden's Syndrome, so anything goes. No one gets hurt, but the brutality is real, and the crowds love it. Until a star athlete drops dead on the playing field.

A witty book with just the right level of snark. I love the Wil Wharton’s narration, he may be Wesley Crusher to some, but I think his audio book narration is my favorite stuff of his. I love the range he brings to it, how he gets to stretch out and bring the story to life.

Story
Over 300 years in the future, all humans on the planet Eleusis are refugees following the alien destruction of Earth. Within this society of haves and have-nots, of criminals and dissidents, of former alien conquerors claiming a desire for peaceful cohabitation, three stories intertwine: a young girl abducted by a violent warlord, twin brothers searching for the lost son of a human/alien couple, and a young woman with extraordinary powers who’s risen through the insurgent ranks in the borderlands called Night.

Wily, charming Kuni Garu, a bandit, and stern, fearless Mata Zyndu, the son of a deposed duke, seem like polar opposites. Yet in the uprising against the emperor, the two quickly become the best of friends after a series of adventures fighting against vast conscripted armies, silk-draped airships, and shapeshifting gods.

Story
The Moon will soon return. Whether this heralds the destruction of humankind or something worse will depend on two women. Essun has inherited the power of Alabaster Tenring. With it, she hopes to find her daughter Nassun and forge a world in which every orogene child can grow up safe. For Nassun, her mother's mastery of the Obelisk Gate comes too late. She has seen the evil of the world, and accepted what her mother will not admit: That sometimes what is corrupt cannot be cleansed, only destroyed.

Story
Over the course of a 30-year career, Eddie Izzard has proven himself to be a creative chameleon, inhabiting the stage and film and television screens with an unbelievable fervor. Born in Yemen and raised in Ireland, Wales, and postwar England, he lost his mother at the age of six. In his teens he dropped out of university and took to the streets of London as part of a two-man escape act; when his partner went on vacation, Izzard kept busy by inventing a one-man act, and thus a career was ignited.

I don't normally go in for autobiographies (unless it's Gerald Durrell or Roald Dahl), I don't know why, but if there were more like this one, I would. I love Eddie's stand up and I think I love this even more. There is a wonderful sense of comradely and it helps me feel better about myself as a creative person to. A bit like hanging out with a dear friend I didn't know I had.

Story
New York Times best-selling author Kim Stanley Robinson returns with a bold and brilliant vision of New York City in the next century. As the sea levels rose, every street became a canal. Every skyscraper an island. For the residents of one apartment building in Madison Square, however, New York in the year 2140 is far from a drowned city. There is the market trader, who finds opportunities where others find trouble. There is the detective, whose work will never disappear—along with the lawyers, of course.

A dream of the future. A love letter to a city. A love letter to humanity, a love letter to the non-human... and proper love with all the complexities, nuance and willingness to see flaws and love anyway that gives love its texture.

Story
This is the way the world ends, for the last time. The season of endings grows darker, as civilization fades into the long cold night. Essun - once Damaya, once Syenite, now avenger - has found shelter, but not her daughter. Instead there is Alabaster Tenring, destroyer of the world, with a request. But if Essun does what he asks, it would seal the fate of the Stillness forever. Far away, her daughter Nassun is growing in power - and her choices will break the world.

Story
Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. And a zealous, bigoted tyrant has won his way into the White House. Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change". Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.

Beautiful story that speaks to our times
Reviewed: 08-09-16
What a time to listen to this story. It has a gritty hope that can only come with hardship, healing through great pain, profound survival and a vision for the stars. Well characterized, a story that holds you, both narrators do a terrific job.
My only sadness is that Octavia Butler isn't with us anymore, she had more to say and was gone too soon. I wish her books had been in my high school when I was a younger, her work would have been a good friend to me.

Story
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

You know when you read a book so good you keep turning conversations into an opportunity to talk about the book? That's the Fifth Season. I got bored with fantasy a while ago, but Jemisin keeps doing things in epic fantasy that make me giddy. Seriously giddy. The POV structure, the world building, the way I cannot imagine what will happen next and am so intrigued. Satisfying, enjoyable, do yourself a favor and get this book into you.
