Story
Dr. Albert Shaw of the "Review of Reviews", after reading the manuscript, characterized the author as "The Robinson Crusoe of the Twentieth Century". I desire, therefore, to assure the reader at the outset that Dr. Ossendowski is a man of long and diverse experience as a scientist and writer with a training for careful observation which should put the stamp of accuracy and reliability on his chronicle.

Great Book Spoiled by Bad Production
Reviewed: 03-24-23
Firstly, the writing itself is great and I really enjoyed the content of the book. However the audio production is horrible. No attention was paid to audio quality and it clearly was not listened to before publishing. There is frequently distortion and a kind of ringing that can be heard in multiple chapters; But also you can hear watch alarms going off, dogs barking and doors being opened and closed. While the quality of the equipment is nice and recording itself is high quality in terms of sampling and bit-rate, the actual output is very hard to listen to which is pretty disappointing. The narrator is good for the most part, his voice is pleasant to listen to and does a good job with the material. However the other issues make the book not worth getting. Either wait for another recording or just read it yourself.

Extreme shifts in quality
Reviewed: 01-21-22
At the end of this book I find it very odd. Some ideas that Jordan has are fantastic and I have attempted to integrate into my own life and they have been extremely helpful. Some other ideas, however are so incompetent and ignorantly formed that’s it’s hard to not laugh. When Jordan sticks to psychology he tends to have his best ideas. But as soon as he drifts into History, biology, politics or metaphysics it goes downhill quickly. He is often just wrong or pontificating on ideas he doesn’t fully understand.
At times he comes across as very self important, both in writing and in narration. He clearly is very impressed with himself and it bugged me throughout. Another note on his narration; he cries at least three times throughout the course of the reading. I found it off putting that he did not re-record these passages. It’s extremely distracting from the material been read.
If you know about this book and are interested in It, I would recommend you give it a listen. I would not recommend it generally however.

Robert E. Howard, renowned creator of Conan the Barbarian, was also a master at conjuring tales of hair-raising horror. In a career spanning only 12 years, Howard wrote more than 100 stories, with his most celebrated work appearing in Weird Tales, the preeminent pulp magazine of the era.

Good Range of Howard's Weird Fiction

A lot of great stories in here with few or no duds among them. You get to hear a lot of stories from the various Howard universes, like Solomon Kane and Conan stories with horrific elements. As well as one-off stories in a theme similar to Lovecraft, but a more action/adventure focus. It was a great performance which always kept me engaged and excited to hear more. Great book, I would recommend it. My only complaint is that the track titles are generic (Track 1, Track 2, etc...) and not the story names.

Story
Auckland Island is a godforsaken place in the middle of the Southern Ocean, 285 miles south of New Zealand. With year-round freezing rain and howling winds, it is one of the most forbidding places in the world. To be shipwrecked there means almost certain death. In 1864, Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew of four aboard the schooner Grafton wreck on the southern end of the island. Utterly alone in a dense coastal forest, plagued by stinging blowflies and relentless rain, Captain Musgrave inspires his men to take action.

I really enjoyed both the narration and the story. Excellently written, I chewed through this book in a day or two and was gripped every second of it.
