Meredith White was one of Hollywood's most recognizable faces. But a personal tragedy cut her acting career short and alienated her from her family. For the last 15 years, Meredith has been living alone in San Francisco with two trusted caretakers. Then a massive earthquake strikes Northern California. Meredith invites her stunned and shaken neighbors into her mostly undamaged home as the recovery begins. These people did not even realize that a movie star was living on their street. Now, they are sharing her mansion, as well as their most closely kept secrets.

While the plot was okay and could have been great, the writing was awful . Very elementary. I don’t understand why she was such a big author.

Story
What do you do when there are no borders? When the lines you thought existed simply vanish? How do you plant your feet to make a stand when you no longer know what side you’re on? The war has come home. For over forty years, Art Keller has been on the front lines of America’s longest conflict: The War on Drugs. His obsession to defeat the world’s most powerful, wealthy, and lethal kingpin—the godfather of the Sinaloa Cartel, Adán Barrera—has left him bloody and scarred, cost him the people he loves, even taken a piece of his soul.

This was a ride I wasn’t expecting. Rich characters with a plot so full, you are captured from the beginning and can’t let go. I had a hard time breaking from it and while it is a long book, it doesn’t seem so. The action is edge-of-your-seat intense too. I’m looking forward to the rest in this series.
I became a fan of Winslow from some Audible Plus stories and listened to a more tame series that I also loved. Winslow is a power house of an author. And Ray Porter is incredible with his intense and dramatic (but not overly so) narration. This book will stick with me and even had me doing research on the covert war the CIA took part in during the 1980s.

Story
It was supposed to be fun. A relaxing trip to a remote mountain retreat where there’s no phone reception. Three couples, friends since high school, are looking forward to a weekend of drinking, reminiscing and flirting. When someone suggests swapping partners, it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. The lights will be switched off, for privacy. It’s not really cheating if you don’t know who you were with, right? But when the lights come back on, one of the men is dead. No-one can agree who was in which bedroom with whom.

I often can often guess at least one plot twist in most mystery thrillers I read, but I didn’t see it coming in this book. The author sucked me in to the story so much, I forgot to try to guess. Which made the experience really great for me! It was a fantastic book!

Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Absolutely beautiful story of friendship, perseverance and what home really means. I’ve listened to it twice now and will probably listen again down the road. Krueger gives such depth and believability to his characters it’s very easy to become invested emotionally in the story. It’s a gripping tale, one that will keep you enthralled and sometimes have on the edge of your seat!
