Both a captivating narrative and a book of environmental and historical significance, American Buffalo tells us as much about ourselves as Americans as it does about the creature who perhaps best of all embodies the American ethos.

Disappointing - poor writing and performance
Reviewed: 04-09-25
Look, I grew up in a hunting family in a depressed area of the USA…I have cousins and uncles and planting acquaintances who tell their boastful hunting stories. But this book is awful. The cadence of the reading, the unnecessary details (i drove this way but got blocked due to mudslides so went through this town on this road and here I stopped to eat burritos - that was his description of going to the library to get a book on skulls). The editor of this book should be fired. I just couldn’t get through more than 5 chapters. This guy thinks he is the great white hunter. It could have been a great story but the performance and writing is sub-par. Extremely disappointing. Had the potential to be a good story.

As a quilter, I really enjoyed this story. The high pitched little girls voice was somewhat annoying but the narrator did a good job creating variety of voices for each character.

Story
Some people bounce back in response to setbacks; others break. We often think that these responses are hardwired, but fortunately this is not the case. Stoicism offers us an alternative approach. Plumbing the wisdom of one of the most popular and successful schools of thought from ancient Rome, philosopher William B. Irvine teaches us to turn any challenge on its head. The Stoic Challenge, then, is the ultimate guide to improving your quality of life through tactics developed by ancient Stoics, from Marcus Aurelius and Seneca to Epictetus.

I really liked the book and presentation. There is one chapter towards the end where he went on a tangent about religions which I felt was somewhat superficial and unknowledgable, but besides this one point I enjoyed the book. I think its ideas and “tests” can be applied to a follower of any or no religion. In fact, as a student of biblical scripture with several Muslim and hindu friends, I would say Jesus was most definitely a stoic but the other religions are better at putting it i to practice. 🤣 I will definitely search out more books on the topic!

Learning Native Wisdom

Story
Learning Native Wisdom explains why achieving a sustainable culture is more important than any other challenge we face today. Although there are many measures of a society's progress, Holthaus warns that only a shift away from our current culture of short-term abundance, founded on a belief in infinite economic growth, will represent true advancement. In societies that value the longevity of people, culture, and the environment, subsistence and spirituality soon become closely allied with sustainability.

Mechanical voice but the words are wise!
Reviewed: 01-24-23
I especially loved the chapters on spirituality and sustainability. Explains and describes how our current culture is unsustainable; it is a very wholistic book, discusses a wide range of topics (history, philosophy, poverty, social injustice, nature and Nature). The author is fair while firmly standing his ground in his own beliefs, but does not blame. Rather he attempts to clarify the how and why of today’s US culture compared to the how and why of native cultures, and how we got from one to the other, while offering thoughts in how to return/change the way we think and do things.
I really LOVED the content, but it was quite difficult to listen to - the voice was rather mechanical and stilted and quite often some bits that were missed in the first recording were spliced in quite roughly.

Story
Speaking from the cultural viewpoint of the Lakota of the northern Plains, the author discusses the evolution of native cultures to fit within the environment and adapt to it, as opposed to changing it drastically or wholesale to fit human needs and comforts. He suggests that changing our contemporary thinking in relating to the earth in a less harmful way does not mean a drastic change in lifestyles....

This was such an engaging and insightful listen. It’s part-biography, ecology lesson, history and truthful explanation of how we have come to the state we are in now…it’s so many things - I loved it! The perspective of native Americans and their deep love and respect of the earth creates the interwoven structure upon which the story pulls you in as soon as it starts, taking you along with the author, making you a part of it. Serious and simply honest - one of the best ecological books I have listened too that really gets to the heart of the matter and the spirit behind our misuse of our resources, fellow humans and our planet. I really hope the wisdom given by John Marshall III will be taken to heart, and that we will look back down the path we have just come to find our way back.
