Story
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Story
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

Touching and Enduring

I've listened to this audiobook 3 or 4 times now and I never tire of it. The story is beautiful and complex. It touches on something that everyone can relate to in some way. The grief that gives way to action, connection, and eventually forgiveness and joy peals away the layers of time and age. A favorite moment of mine is the description of the lost compass. It's absense is so vast it has a presence. Who hasn't felt that?

What did you love best about How to Be an American Housewife?
The mother daughter relationship was so touching.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The mother. She helps one see the complexity of people... you can't judge a book by it's cover. This goes for our own parents and grandparents too.
Have you listened to any of Laural Merlington and Emily Durante ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
no

What would have made Fifty Shades of Grey better?
Why did the main character have to talk like a 15 year old girl? Nothing sexy about child abuse.
Has Fifty Shades of Grey turned you off from other books in this genre?
probably, I'm no prude. This was just childish and belittling. I am amazed so many women find this enticing.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Childish.
What character would you cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?
Anna

Story
At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

Story
Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten. The Fault in Our Stars is insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw. It brilliantly explores the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes I would recommend this book. I used to be a big fan of the One Last Wish books when I was a teenager after the loss of my mother. It may be sad, but it helped me feel connected. This is a similar type book, but better written. It's touching and funny with a linguistically above average female protagonist straight out of the likes of Juno.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fault in Our Stars?
As a mother myself, the grenade speech was heartwrenching.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both

Story
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Any additional comments?
I gave it 4stars overall because some of the nursing home scenes get tedious, but a good listen overall.
