Story
Things are looking up. For the first time in what feels like years, October "Toby" Daye has been able to pause long enough to take a breath and look at her life - and she likes what she sees. She has friends. She has allies. She has a squire to train and a King of Cats to love, and maybe, just maybe, she can let her guard down for a change.

Another awesome October Daye
Reviewed: 04-19-24
This was another awesome October Daye story with one tiny flaw in the narration: the pronunciation on some of the words has changed despite this one having the same narrator as the other books. It was slightly annoying at first, but I quickly got used to it in favor of enjoying the storytelling. Even if you think it'll annoy you, buy this audiobook anyway. You get so absorbed you no longer notice after awhile, and it's definitely worth it to hear the story told.

Story
Jacqueline was her mother’s perfect daughter—polite and quiet, always dressed as a princess. If her mother was sometimes a little strict, it’s because crafting the perfect daughter takes discipline. Jillian was her father’s perfect daughter—adventurous, thrill-seeking, and a bit of a tom-boy. He really would have preferred a son, but you work with what you've got. They were five when they learned that grown-ups can’t be trusted. They were twelve when they walked down the impossible staircase and discovered that the pretense of love can never be enough to prepare you a life filled with magic.

Perfect sequel to Every Heart a Doorway!
Reviewed: 09-26-23
I loved Every Heart a Doorway, and I loved this one, too. It gives more detail to the lives of the twins in the first book while telling its own story. The narration (by the author!) was absolutely stunning in its expression. I wasn't crazy about the previous narrator, and I'm so glad this one was narrated by the author; she's fantastic at it, and the story was superb. I'll definitely be continuing the series.

So I'm fairly new to Terry Pratchett but I must say I'm loving the new audiobooks they're putting out. The narration is top notch, and Pratchett's stories are imaginative, funny, and overall just wonderful. This one is a riff off of Phantom of the Opera, but it's got an original plot and characters, so you won't get bored even if you think you know the story. Also the worldbuilding is completely different in Pratchett's universe than anything else I've ever read. It's amazing.

Story
Galapagos takes the listener back one million years to AD 1986. A simple vacation cruise suddenly becomes an evolutionary journey. Thanks to an apocalypse, a small group of survivors stranded on the Galapagos Islands are about to become the progenitors of a brave, new, totally different human race. Kurt Vonnegut, America's master satirist, looks at our world and shows us all that is sadly, madly awry - and all that is worth saving.

This is my favorite book by Kurt Vonnegut. It starts with an apocalypse and goes from there - into a very interesting development I never would have expected. This is not your typical post-apocalyptic science fiction.

A Continuation of Blackout.
Reviewed: 01-30-20
This one is well worth the listen - one of my most favorites, but don't listen to it until you've read or listened to Blackout. This is a continuation of that story. That said, it's in my top 10 books of all time, and I've read hundreds. Highly recommended. Also check out the other time-traveling historians in the series.

Story
In her first novel since 2002, Nebula and Hugo award-winning author Connie Willis returns with a stunning, enormously entertaining novel of time travel, war, and the deeds - great and small - of ordinary people who shape history. In the hands of this acclaimed storyteller, the past and future collideand the result is at once intriguing, elusive, and frightening.

You're in for a wild ride!
Reviewed: 01-30-20
I'll start by saying Blackout and All Clear are a package deal, so don't expect to listen to one and not the other; you'll want to start All Clear immediately after finishing Blackout, because you can't just let the story end there. These books are amazing - the best time travel science fiction I have ever read, and I don't say that lightly. Anyone interested in time travel or WWII history will love them. You really connect to the characters, and you can't guess what will happen next. Time travel is my favorite topic in sci-fi and fantasy, and this series is my number one recommendation in that category. If you like these, listen to all of the Oxford Time Travel series. They're worth it.
I want more. I will definitely keep an eye on Connie Willis. I hope by the time I've gotten through her other works she'll have released a new one.

In this Hugo Award-winning classic, Enoch Wallace is an ageless hermit, striding across his untended farm as he had done for over a century, still carrying the gun with which he had served in the Civil War. But what his neighbors must never know is that, inside his unchanging house, he meets with a host of unimaginable friends from the farthest stars.

Reviewed: 01-30-20
I listened to this one years ago and never reviewed it, but I still think about the story and characters. Character development in Connie Willis books is superb, and even though this is not my favorite of her books, it stuck with me. But this one is depressing, so be prepared to follow it up with something light-hearted or funny. Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams would be a good choice.

Story
In this Hugo-winner from Connie Willis, when too many jumps back to 1940 leave 21st century Oxford history student Ned Henry exhausted, a relaxing trip to Victorian England seems the perfect solution. But complexities like recalcitrant rowboats, missing cats, and love at first sight make Ned's holiday anything but restful - to say nothing of the way hideous pieces of Victorian art can jeopardize the entire course of history.

This is the first book in the Mars trilogy, and it does start out slow. If you want to get right into the action, this book might not be for you. But if you love sociological exploration of the human condition through science fiction, hang in there. It's worth it in the end. If you like this one, you'll love the sequels as well.
