As Deena and Gary Sharpe celebrate their anniversary, things are not all wine and roses. Gary is restless at his job while Deena just wishes she still had one. To make matters worse, one of Gary’s clients, a local vineyard owner, commits suicide. However, the victim’s sister thinks he was murdered, and her suspicions lead Deena and Gary to team up to unearth the truth. Can Deena impress the local newspaper editor enough to get her old job back? Will Gary quit his firm and risk everything he’s worked for on a new business venture? The stakes are high in Sharpe Note.

I LOL'd repeatedly with this one!
Reviewed: 02-04-20
I first picked up this series on a whim - I love a good cozy mystery for falling asleep at night (much to my husband's chagrin). There's just something so soothing about a zany cast of characters getting themselves into kooky situations with just a sprinkling of murder mystery thrown in....the combination lulls me right off to dreamland. My library was out my usual fix (Diane Mott Davidson's sleuthing caterer Goldy Schulz) and I had recently signed up with audiobookboom.com when I noticed the first book in this series. With it's fun cover art and intriguing titles the Maycroft Mysteries are naturally eye-catching. But once you get past the cover page you're in until you reach the end of the book with this fast-paced, clever series. There is really never a dull moment with these characters and I honestly have no idea how these books are not yet dominating the cozy mysteries market - they need to go main stream where more readers can fall in love with Deena Sharpe the way I have. I have faithfully made my way through this entire series and cannot wait for Ms. Thomas to write more! And part of what makes this series so great is the audiobooks narrated by the incredibly talented Kelley Hazan who absolutely brings the characters to life. This book - Sharpe Note - in particular was just so much fun. I don't want to spoil the plot for you but I nearly fell out of bed laughing at the part where the identity of the real "Queen" was revealed. Goodness gracious, too funny. Don't take my word for it - if you love a solid cozy mystery series you're going to love the Maycroft Mysteries books. Thank you to Lisa B. Thomas, Kelley Hazan, and audiobookboom.com for the complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.

Story
New Grub Street (1891) has the reputation of being George Gissing's finest novel. With bitter humour and grim realism, it tells the story of the ambitions, dreams, and disappointments of men and women struggling to earn their living as writers in the closing years of the Victorian era. Jasper Milvain is a young writer of limited talent, eager to exploit every opportunity and social connection in order to make his way. For those who toil "in the valley of the shadow of books" the spectre of poverty looms large.

New Grub Street is a great story, don't get me wrong....it's just a bit slow for my taste. I like faster pacing. Character development was great and it's an interesting story line. Best part of this audio book, for me, was the narration.

Story
When the story begins, a mother duck's eggs hatch. One of the little birds is perceived by the other birds and animals on the farm as a homely little creature and suffers much verbal and physical abuse from them. He wanders sadly from the barnyard and lives with wild ducks and geese until hunters slaughter the flocks. He finds a home with an old woman. The duckling sees a flock of migrating wild swans. He is delighted and excited, but he cannot join them, for he is too young and cannot fly.

Story
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a horror story by American author Washington Irving. Written while Irving was living abroad in Birmingham, England, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was first published in 1820. It is among the earliest examples of American fiction with enduring popularity, especially during Halloween because of a character known as the Headless Horseman believed to be a Hessian soldier who lost his head to a cannonball in battle.

This is a beautiful narration of an incredibly creepy classic tale. My son and I absolutely love this version. Roberto Scarlato did a great job bringing Washington Irving's old fashioned way with words to life. It's a timeless story and this audio version pays a nice homage to it. Would highly recommend for anyone seeking to read this book for pleasure or for studies.

Truly entertaining from start to finish

This is a great cozy mystery from Lisa B. Thomas that had me thoroughly entertained from cover to cover. The story is filled with hilariously zany characters (as I've come to expect from Thomas) and the story line here does not disappoint. I absolutely loved the drifters who strolled into town and set up a booming psychic business and the impact that had on the townspeople. This was also a neat story in the way that it showed our protagonist Deana Sharpe beginning to transition from out of work teacher to real private investigator (including a scene where she's forced to dive straight into a dumpster to recover evidence). Deana's got a lot of heart and a sense of humor - I enjoy learning about the wacky characters from her perspective. Perfectly narrated - as always - by the multi-talented Kelley Hazan. Story
Deena Sharpe knows nothing about investigating a cold-blooded murder, but when her sweet aunt asks her to find out who killed her son, that’s exactly what Deena agrees to do. Only hitch, he died 50 years earlier, although his body was just discovered in a sheriff’s forgotten evidence closet. To make matters worse, a big-city conspiracy nut is determined to cash in on her family’s misfortune and implicate Deena’s dead cousin in the crime of the century.

This was such a fun, quirky and hilariously clever story from start to finish. I loved it! Great character development with excellent narration (as always) for a great big cast of kooky characters. I enjoyed the dynamics between the characters (Deena and the elderly socialite, Deena's brother and anyone he interacted with, the villainous writer from NYC and Deena)...the whole story was a riot. And I couldn't get enough of that JFK backstory, how fantastic. This book was thoroughly enjoyed thanks to a courtesy credit in exchange for my review. I highly recommend Sharpe Shooter, Lisa B. Thomas and Kelley Hazan!

The narrator did a good job taking this story a bit farther. It's a simple story but she's got a fun voice and made quick work of giving the characters as much personality as possible. An interesting story, novel concept. We enjoyed it but my son's attention wore off about 75% into it....probably better for kids older than five.
