Story
When the once-mighty city of Rome was sacked by barbarians in 410 and lay in ruins, it signaled the end of an era—and the beginning of a thousand years of profound transformation. In a gripping narrative bursting with big names—from St Augustine and Attila the Hun to the Prophet Muhammad and Eleanor of Aquitaine—Dan Jones charges through the history of the Middle Ages. Powers and Thrones takes listeners on a journey through an emerging Europe, the great capitals of late Antiquity, as well as the influential cities of the Islamic West.

Good general overview
Reviewed: 02-12-22
This has been a good general overview of medieval European history. It doesn't contain any groundbreaking, new insights, but is a good compilation of other analyses.
There is a big drag on the book inserted in various places. The author is yet another stuffy man who is smart enough to understand the difference between facing consequences for behavior and being cancelled due to heresy, yet complains that there is none. Being held to a standard of treating all other humans beings with respect and acknowledging their humanity is a very far cry from being persecuted for heresy by the medieval church. The willful conflating of the two is glaring enough to throw a large shadow over the assessment of his ability to apply lessons from history to modern life.

Story
This brilliantly readable work of history tells the bizarre story of the Ottoman Empire as seen through the lives of its extravagant and tyrannical sultans. With their absolute power, their love of pomp, and their overwhelming venality and corruption, rarely has a great empire been ruled by such grotesque and awesome figures. For 400 years, they fought wars, terrorized their subjects, made Turkey into a great empire, and then allowed her to decline into ostentatious and impotent decay.

Old Pompous Brit
Reviewed: 12-02-20
I found this book often informed me more on the old British perspective of the world than it did the history of Anatolia. The author's perspective is quite insightful - when not racist and misogynistic. It is an enjoyable listen that did give me much food for thought, but do know what you're getting yourself into when starting this one.

Heavy on Rome

While interesting, please note that this is very Roman centric. It is of less interest if you are not interested in religion in Rome pre-Christianity.

Go Away Old Man

The Firefly stuff was cute, but the rest got old real fast. If you're old and don't understand changes in the world that help others, then maybe you need to sit and listen a bit. Griping about how society is changing to no longer marginalize people just makes you look dumb. Skip this book unless you find yourself enjoying the "Get off my lawn!" mentality.

Story
We know of psychopaths from chilling headlines and stories in the news and movies - from Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy to Hannibal Lecter and Dexter Morgan. As Dr. Kent Kiehl shows, psychopaths can be identified by a checklist of symptoms that includes pathological lying; lack of empathy, guilt, and remorse; grandiose sense of self-worth; manipulation; and failure to accept one’s actions. But why do psychopaths behave the way they do? Is it the result of their environment - how they were raised - or is there a genetic component to their lack of conscience?

A Scientist Very Impressed with Himself
Reviewed: 11-05-18
The author thinks very highly of himself, so thinks we all care about the minutia of his process. There are long periods of him droning on about nothing. However, he has done some really interesting work. It would have been much better is the book was more about psychopaths and less about the researcher, but the work itself is interesting enough to warrant sitting through the rest of the book.
(The narrator is good and may deserve 5 stars. I may be biased due to the tedious nature of many passages)
