Story
As Dorian Lynskey writes, “People have been contemplating the end of the world for millennia.” In this immersive and compelling cultural history, Lynskey reveals how religious prophecies of the apocalypse were secularized in the early 19th century by Lord Byron and Mary Shelley in a time of dramatic social upheaval and temporary climate change, inciting a long tradition of visions of the end without gods.

Reviewed: 02-19-25
When I was in middle school I was afraid that the world was going to end and I wouldn’t be able to enjoy my adulthood. The end world was and still is a constant source of anxiety and mental agony. I would say this book cured me of it, but it was a book helped me better understand my fears. The author is right, it’s gift to be here and experience life. Hopefully you get to feel the same way too.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Story
The night after a shooting star is seen streaking through the sky from Mars, a cylinder is discovered on Horsell Common in London. At first, naïve locals approach the cylinder armed just with a white flag - only to be quickly killed by an all-destroying heat ray, as terrifying tentacled invaders emerge. Soon the whole of human civilisation is under threat, as powerful Martians build gigantic killing machines, destroy all in their path with black gas and burning rays, and feast on the warm blood of trapped, still-living human prey.

I have seen the movies, the parodies, and references to this famous novel, but I have never read the book before. I pick this up, and I can see why it is so important and beloved. It was still able to surprise me and made me ask questions. If you want to read an early sci-fi story and see where these tropes came from, this book is for you.

Story
The superhero comic books that Marvel Comics has published since 1961 are, as Douglas Wolk notes, the longest continuous, self-contained work of fiction ever created: over half a million pages to date, and still growing. The Marvel story is a gigantic mountain smack in the middle of contemporary culture. Thousands of writers and artists have contributed to it. Everyone recognizes its protagonists: Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men. Eighteen of the hundred highest-grossing movies of all time are based on parts of it. Yet not even the people telling the story have read the whole thing.

When I first saw that there was going to be an audiobook about the in-universe history of marvel comics I was thrilled. When I pick it up months later I can say that it was a great book to listen to. It made me want to follow some of the plot threads and explore more of the marvel comic book. It is really helpful if you you want to start to read superhero comics. Also there is a twist at the end that makes the book even more special.

Story
In 1911, famed cartoonist Winsor McCay debuted one of the first animated cartoons, based on his sophisticated newspaper strip Little Nemo in Slumberland, itself inspired by Freud’s recent research on dreams. McCay is largely forgotten today, but he unleashed an art form and the creative energy of artists from Otto Messmer and Max Fleischer to Walt Disney and Warner Bros.’ Chuck Jones. Wild Minds is an ode to our colorful past and to the creative energy that later inspired The Simpsons, South Park, and BoJack Horseman.

For Any Hitchhiker Fan
Reviewed: 11-14-20
When I was 12 I saw a trailer for the Hitchhiker guide to the Galaxy Movie. My Dad took me and I fell in love with the series. A few years later I listen to the first book (Narrated by Stephen Fry) and then the later book narrated by Martin Freeman (Though I am still confused if it is the same Martin Freeman as the actor). When Another Thing came out I listen to that too. I knew from a little research and Youtube videos that it was a radio series and a tv series. After about a decade of not listening to the Hitchhiker Guide To the Galaxy material, I saw this audiobook on Audible. I Wish list it and bought it a few months later.
It is a good in depth look into the Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy From radio series to 2009. If you want a history on Douglas Adam's work than this is it. Simon Jones does a great job (As usual) and Neil Gaiman reads the intro. It was written by a person who knew Adam and it shows. You will also meet others who helped guide it and make it what it is today. I should end this review with quote or reference, but sadly I can't think of one.
