I used to hate running
Reviewed: 03-21-21
I have never run a race before, and did not like to run. Halfway through the program, I actually enjoyed running and began to consider myself a runner. The narrator gives great advice as she prepares you for race day. You do not have to think, as she tells you exactly when to speed up or slow down or stop. She helps you in recovery, clothing, eating, form... everything you need to practice for your race. I did not enjoy the music, but the training was great.

Story
For five brief, glorious days in the autumn of 1956, the Hungarian revolution gave its people a glimpse at a different kind of future - until, at four o’clock in the morning on a Sunday in November, the citizens of Budapest awoke to the shattering sound of Russian tanks ravaging their streets. The revolution was over. But freedom beckoned in the form of a small footbridge at Andau, on the Austrian border. By an accident of history, it became, for a few harrowing weeks, one of the most important crossings in the world, as the soul of a nation fled across its unsteady planks.

Should be required reading of every high school student in the United States.
Fascinating, at times difficult to listen to due to the nature of the subject.

Story
One month in 1865 witnessed the frenzied fall of Richmond, a daring last-ditch Southern plan for guerrilla warfare, Lee's harrowing retreat, and then, Appomattox. It saw Lincoln's assassination just five days later and a near-successful plot to decapitate the Union government, followed by chaos and coup fears in the North, collapsed negotiations and continued bloodshed in the South, and finally, the start of national reconciliation.

Wonderful storytelling, interesting thesis
Reviewed: 07-21-20
Have wanted to listen to this since 2001, the divided state of our current nation (summer 2020) had me finally do it. Great book. Fascinating thesis. Intricate and engaging storytelling with background on characters.
My only issue is that a couple of times in the book the sound went muffled. You could still hear and understand, it just detracted from the presentation.
And I wish the keypoints were outlined in the prologue rather than the epilogue so I knew what to listen for and not be in danger of thinking, "What is the point of this part?" when that part got a little long.
Also, Mr. Winik, the Mormons did not want independence. They loved America. They celebrated when they became a State, emblazoning the U.S. flag on their sacred temple in 1896 as they achieved statehood. They wanted to worship in peace, elect their own leaders as a State (not a territory) and not be overseen by corrupt territorial governors and justices who sent lies to Johnson as revenge.

Eye opening, thorough telling, often gutwrenching
Reviewed: 07-14-20
As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this book was extremely helpful in understanding what happened. It holds nothing back in telling what happened. Because of how gutwrenching it is, and how awful the murderous act was, it was difficult to listen to, but honest. There are those who criticize the book for failing to implicate certain individuals, saying it caters to an LDS audience. I can tell you, this does nothing to placate members of the LDS faith, but rather raises questions that we must find our own answers to. Excellent book.

Story
A stunning and sure to be controversial book that pieces together, through more than two dozen 19th-century diaries, letters, albums, minute books, and quilts left by first-generation Latter-day Saints, or Mormons, the never before told story of the earliest days of the women of Mormon "plural marriage", whose right to vote in the state of Utah was given to them by a Mormon-dominated legislature as an outgrowth of polygamy in 1870, 50 years ahead of the vote nationally ratified by Congress.

No holds barred analysis of women in early church
Reviewed: 07-03-20
This book was pretty heady stuff. sometimes I had to slog through it, but when you found those gems, it was amazing. I am an unapologetic and practicing member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. that being said it provided heavy context into the practice of polygamy and the men and women who lived it.
Rather then simply put forward her own ideas, she quoted extensively from those who lived it. it was eye-opening and empowering.

While building the Virgin Group over 40 years, Richard Branson has never shied away from seemingly outlandish challenges that others (including his own colleagues on several occasions) considered sheer lunacy. He has taken on giants like British Airways and won, and monsters like Coca-Cola and lost. Now Branson gives an inside look at his strikingly different swashbuckling style of leadership.
