Great story, hard to get into

Jumping back and forth between storylines was a barrier for me to this otherwise great book. One of the storylines was way more compelling than the other and I’m glad I stuck with it to the end but I almost gave up a number of times. Stick with it. It’s worth reading

Story
A compassionate, humorous story of faith, betrayal, and coming of age on the sawdust trail. She was just three years old when her mother signed on as the organist of tent revivalist David Terrell, and before long, Donna Johnson was part of the hugely popular evangelical preacher’s inner circle. At seventeen, she left the ministry for good, with a trove of stranger-than-fiction memories.

Outstanding book, objective as she could possibly be. For an ex-Christian, this book helped me voice a lot of things I struggled with as a child.

Any additional comments?
I downloaded this book to find out what all the hype was about and it turns out that this is the most horribly written book I have ever read. I hated almost every second of the six chapters I somehow managed to wade through without throwing myself of a bridge, but I kept thinking, maybe if I just keep listening it will get better. But it didn't. I should preface by saying I am sex-positive, love erotic fiction, read Dan Savage all the time, and pro-BDSM. So, my hatred for this book has nothing to do with the subject matter.
I have multiple problems with this book.
1) The writing is horrible. Terrible phrases are overused to the point where it is extremely distracting. Every other sentence Ana is "blushing scarlet" or "flushing beet red", saying "holy crap" or "holy ___" fill in the blank. Christian is always gazing, paralyzing her with his good looks. I started keeping track of overused words but once I hit 18 uses of "blushing" I had to stop reading, it was just too painful.
2) The plot is horrible. The fact that this is a bootleg erotica story based on the Twilight books is so painfully obvious. Ana is clumsy and terrible at sports and falls a lot? Okay.
3) This story paints BDSM in such a stupid, negative light. In reality, you should be having discussions on what each person is into, negotiate the encounter, and there isn't just one person in control doing whatever they want to the submissive.
Really, America? This is what hits the top of the best seller lists?

Story
The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of 30 million souls, to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet.

Fantastic book, but ABRIDGED?? WHY?!?!
Reviewed: 11-23-12
What made the experience of listening to World War Z the most enjoyable?
The ONLY reason I can't rate this 5 stars is because it was too short. There seemed to be layers left out of the story and when I went back to look at the description I saw it was abridged, which really seems to explain it all. I haven't even read the original and I could tell it was abridged just by listening... I can't fathom why they would choose to do this unless the original unabridged version is poorly written (doubt it). Otherwise, that was my only complaint - I listened to this in one day and accomplished nearly nothing because I was so engrossed.
