Story
Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,” but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind.

Feels like the inside of a very troubled soul

Unconventional story telling with poignant moments that make the book worth the while. Appreciated the feelings of grief and sadness shared and after a while be accustomed to its seemingly whimsical format. Towards the end one line got too preachy and ruined it for the reader to draw their own conclusions. Has been on many must read’s yet Obama’s list upped its rank for me. Artsy. Liberal. And at times historical. Worth a listen yet take your time getting to it.

Self help book for South Asians

This book is sweet and therapeutic. And definitely distant from typical south Asian families. It’s a hope for what American East Indian heritage families can embrace if they ever want their children to be more than champion spellers and physicians. Well done. Really enjoyed it.

Reflective. At times perfect yet often a lesser version of crying in H mart. The inter generational story poignant yet familiar. Some of it very insightful while others a bit off track. Read this because of SJP yet do feel the author has potential to bloom beyond a quitters paradise.

Story
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.
