Story
Following the disastrous Java Sea campaign, the Allies went on the offensive in the Pacific in a desperate attempt to halt the Japanese forces that were rampaging across the region. With the conquest of Australia a very real possibility, the stakes were high. Their target: the Japanese-held Soloman Islands, in particular the southern island of Guadalcanal. Hamstrung by arcane pre-war thinking and a bureaucratic mind-set, the US Navy had to adapt on the fly in order to compete with the mighty Imperial Japanese Navy, whose ingenuity had fostered the creation of its Pacific empire.

Guadalcanal Campaign at a Tactical Level
Reviewed: 06-08-24
Having read other books about this crucial campaign, I was curious about this authors take. It is a very detailed, maybe even too detailed account of the opening rounds of the Solomon’s campaign. I enjoyed the writers style and learned some interesting details. Look forward to part two.

An exciting follow up to the first Prince novel. It is well written and full of enough detail to provide a great atmosphere without being tedious. Just enough paranoia to keep you guessing, but not wearing the reader/listener out. As a WW2 buff, the story seems very accurate. Well done.

While not everything in the story is totally believable, it is nonetheless quite a thrilling ride and worth the time.

Story
Strictly speaking, Lew Archer is only supposed to dig up the dirt on a rich man's suspicious soon-to-be son-in-law. But in no time at all, Ross Macdonald's private eye is following a trail of corpses from the citrus belt to Mazatlan. And then there is the zebra-striped hearse and its crew of beautiful, sunburned surfers, whose path seems to keep crossing the son-in-law's - and Archer's - in this powerful, fast-paced novel of murder on the California coast.

Story
One American soldier called it "a green hell on Earth". Monsoon-soaked wilderness, debilitating heat, impassable mountains, torrential rivers, and disease-infested swamps - New Guinea was a battleground far more deadly than the most fanatical of enemy troops. Japanese forces numbering some 600,000 men began landing in January 1942, determined to seize the island as a cornerstone of the empire's strategy to knock Australia out of the war.

Obsessive Roller Coaster Ride
Reviewed: 03-31-23
To be fair, the author does point out some odd coincidences but then proceeds to shoehorn all these threads together. A classic epistemic motive that perceives agency and intentionality where none exists. I wish we had a picture of Mr. Terry’s ‘Murder Wall.’ It’s also too long. Narration was fine.
