Story
Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the headmaster of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there. Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth.

All the fun and colorful characters (and some new ones!), this sequel keeps its cozy feel while serving as a good allegory for queer struggles. I think the only fault I could find w/ the story was the protaganists are all very overpowered, so by the end it does feel a little anticlimatic. The narrator also has a couple chapters that are overacted. But minor things to a fun story that I couldn't put down, and good narration with fun voices and lovely production in general.

Story
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Too long and super boring most of the story. I cared so little for most the characters. Whenever their pasts were explored, most of it felt superfluous or preachy. (We get it, you think Californians are vapid and abortion is wrong). So much work getting through for so little pay off.

His past was buried in the poison fields, but after a fateful encounter with a prince, Soren realizes he can’t keep the magic hidden inside forever. Vanya Sa’Liandel was the spare who survived the Houses’ murderous games to become the crown prince of Solaria. He has a duty to his country, but he’ll owe his life to the wardens. Payment of any kind is costly, especially when he risks losing his heart to the man who saved his life.

Great story, amazing narrative
Reviewed: 11-14-23
It took me some chapters to get into, there are so many people in places to remember that not being able to physically see the names, or have a glossary to reference made it a little tricky to listen to. I will probably go back and read a physical copy. That said, really immersive world and the fun story. The narration performance was absolutely amazing, the voices didn’t feel gimmicky and I appreciated the passion in the voice. There were sometimes artifacts in the recording, where suddenly it would get real tinny, I’m not sure if it was just different takes that response together, but it only happened a couple times.

In the spring of 1995, Nate Cartwright has lost everything: his parents are dead, his only brother wants nothing to do with him, and he's been fired from his job as a journalist in Washington, DC. With nothing left to lose, he returns to his family's summer cabin outside the small mountain town of Roseland, Oregon, to try and find some sense of direction. The cabin should be empty. It's not. Inside is a man named Alex. And with him is an extraordinary ten-year-old girl who calls herself Artemis Darth Vader. Artemis, who isn't exactly as she appears.

Enjoyable story, very memorable characters. At times it read like good sci-fi, at times like an action thriller. Good voice performance.

Captain of the famed pirate ship, the Wicked Fate, Maria is every bit as treacherous and bloodthirsty as they say. Niche and really delivers. I was very frustrated w the main characters bickering, but all part of the slow burn and overall a fun listen.
I didn’t understand the Irish brogue for some of the characters and found it really distracting. But the narrator did put a lot of passion into all of it.

I really enjoyed this book, and how the story unfolded. My only complaint is that with the performance, sometimes the wrong voices were used when portraying characters speaking. It happened, at least a dozen times, and each time took me out of the fantasy.
