Not Touchy Feely

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 02-03-07

I considered this book a few times but was always turned off by the title. I wanted to learn more about our mental health system, but I didn't want to sit through a heart wrenching first person account of the suffering.

Luckily the author's experience as a reporter allowed him to give a very balanced account--focusing more on the system than the emotions surrounding a single (personal) case.

It was a very interesting set of stories, and I think it could do a lot to readjust our attitudes.

ZZZzzzz

I was hoping to hear interesting stories in which property rights about property rights abuses. Unfortunately the examples aren't that interesting and you have to listen to hours of unqualified assertions in between. It gets very difficult to draw lines between the author and his sources. I'm willing to bet the printed version of this book is littered with footnotes.

Anyhow, I didn't quite make it to the end, which is pretty unique for me.

Well Written/Read but Contrived Conclusions

Overall
3 out of 5 stars

The author and narrator is very entertaining. Unfortunately, his subjects and conclusions are difficult to relate to and frequently contrived. If you’re looking for an hour’s worth of detailed analysis on the Real World or Saved by the Bell, this is your book. I could have skipped about half of the chapters and been a bit more satisfied. In any case, he does a good job of presenting his topics and with enough comedic sarcasm to keep your attention.
