Story
Chinatown is the Holy Grail of 1970s cinema. Its twist ending is the most notorious in American film and its closing line of dialogue the most haunting. Here for the first time is the incredible true story of its making. In Sam Wasson's telling, it becomes the defining story of the most colorful characters in the most colorful period of Hollywood history. Here is Jack Nicholson at the height of his powers, as compelling a movie star as there has ever been, embarking on his great, doomed love affair with Anjelica Huston.

A Great Chronicle of Hollywood’s Creativity and Debauchery

An “ inside baseball” look at the making of a great Hollywood creation and the end of a creative era. Very dishy and incredibly well reported.

Story
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Perfect voice for a beautiful story
Reviewed: 06-24-23
This is a book that really grows on you -- moving slowly but sweetly toward its conclusion. But Maura Tierney's warm smoky voice is the perfect match for this material. I have read several reviews criticizing the slow pace of the story but I didn't find that at all. It's a beautiful tribute to "Little Women" but much bigger and with lots of heart. Ann Napolitano is a confident author who has a strong message for all humans, but the story is irresistible and no one makes you feel "preached" to. Reading this book was a wonderful experience.

His voice makes it so much sweeter
Reviewed: 01-05-19
This is hilarious, but also touching and an insightful look into the world of comedy, Canada, and, well, I can't think of another "c" word, but trust me, it's really good. Martin Short had a singular kind of career and it is fascinating to learn how it all fit together. He is a loving father, a good friend, and a very funny person. I was inspired to hear him trace his fascinating life on this earth and then watch his "Netflix" special with Steve Martin. A great capstone to a biographical portrait. I highly recommend this.

Story
In The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, Amy mines her past for stories about her teenage years, her family, relationships, and sex and shares the experiences that have shaped who she is - a woman with the courage to bare her soul to stand up for what she believes in, all while making us laugh. Down to earth and relatable, frank and unapologetic, Amy Schumer is one of us: She relies on her sister for advice, still hangs out with her high school pals, and continues to navigate the ever-changing boundaries in love, work, and life.

So disappointing

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I knew this would be weak after listening to the first chapter, but I hung in there and listened to a couple of hours. Wow, the writing is so poor in places. I am frankly shocked that such a popular comic, actress, and entertainer is so uncaptivating in print (is uncaptivating a word)? There are times when the narration is barely audible and quite flat for long phases. My favorite chapter was Amy defending her introverted nature, but the rest...I had to finally give up. Very sorry to say this. I enjoy her so much in other platforms.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Love Warrior
