Story
A magical serial killer is on the loose, and gelatinous, otherworldly creatures are infesting the English countryside. Which is making life for the Ministry of Occultism difficult, because magic is supposed to be their best kept secret. After centuries in the shadows, the Ministry is forced to unmask, exposing the country's magical history - and magical citizens - to a brave new world of social media, government scrutiny, and public relations.

Yahtzee Croshaw is different, in a very good way.

I love Yahtzee Croshaw's novels. They are inventive, funny, and take you places you didn't know you wanted to go. I have listened to 4 now and give them all 5 stars. Reviewing the book is hard without giving away stuff you should find out in the course of reading. It will be more fun that way. If you are looking for great literature, this is not it. If you want to get away, this will take you to a place very different to any you have gone before. It is a very good book to escape to. Yahtzee Croshaw is also a very good narrator.

Story
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

I did not expect to like it this much!

What did you love best about A Man Called Ove?
The old man reminded me of people I have known. Good with things, but not so much with people.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud a couple of times. A time or two it brought a tear to my eye. Did not get too sentimental, but presented hardship the way Ove would have. Something to deal with.
Any additional comments?
I bought the book when I needed something quick, and I thought the preview was funny. I did not expect to love the book as I did. It was a great story with good characters. People were believable. Just people getting by as they can, sometimes needing help from others, and sometimes helping where they can. Sometimes helping others is what is needed to feel alive. Just being useful is a gift.
