I was expecting more of a description of the actual eruption and while this is covered, most of the book is devoted to the history of logging in the area around the mountain. It really brings you face to face with what happened though and the descriptive wording is excellent. Makes me want to take a trip to see it myself.

The first two books in this trilogy were great. They were left leaning but you could overlook that for the interesting stories intertwined with momentous times in history. By the third book, this book, it was to the point where if a character were conservative or republican, they were a crook, ugly, and a pervert! It was just so blatantly one sided. If I had known the third book was going to turn into the author single mindedly washing history through his one sided sifter, I would never have started the trilogy.

Great history in this book! If you are a fan of war novels, this is a must! Some have said that the characters are shallow and underdeveloped, I disagree with this point of view. There was enough detail given of the characters to care about each one. One bad point, IMHO, is that a lot of the discussion in the book centers around left leaning and socialist ideals. This was a small negative to me but this must be taken with a grain of salt as I am conservative. Also, one must be aware that during and after WW1 there were great waves of socialist and/or labour leanings so this lends to making the book feel more authentic.

This book genuinely made me lose the sympathy I had for Princess Diana. For someone so privileged to whine so much was incessant. Also (at least at this point in her life) she was unwilling to confront the mental illness she suffered and was still keen to blame everything about the disintegration of her marriage on her husband (no saint at any rate). She at many locations whines because people don't thank her or tell her "good job".

Let me preface this by saying I don't usually read romances and don't have much history with the genre. The Outlander series turned me on (pun intended) to historical fiction/romances. This was so one-dimensional. All the characters were flat. Nothing really "happened" in the whole story. Nothing outside of the main character's thoughts to move the story along. I think this may be a good book for interesting a teen/young adult reader in romance but not worth it to someone with a more "stories" on their "read" shelf.
