Story
Eleven-year-old David is about to meet his new stepsister, Amanda, who is only one year older than he is. Amanda arrives at their big old house wearing a huge tattered shawl and carrying a sharp-eyed crow in a cage. She is hardly what David expects. Before long, she introduces David to a strange world of witchcraft and the occult. At first, spells and potions are fun. He enjoys the spooky chants and smoky seances. Even his younger brother and sisters join in, making sure their parents suspect nothing.

Great age appropriate spooky story

Loved the characters. Reminded me of how we used to play when I was a child. Great twist at the end.

Story
Pip is not a detective anymore. With the help of Ravi Singh, she released a true-crime podcast about the murder case they solved together last year. The podcast has gone viral, yet Pip insists her investigating days are behind her. But she will have to break that promise when someone she knows goes missing. Jamie Reynolds has disappeared, on the very same night the town hosted a memorial for the sixth-year anniversary of the deaths of Andie Bell and Sal Singh.

Nowhere near as compelling as book 1

I loved book 1 in this series. The narrator gets a bit whiny, but honestly that is probably due to the writing. The story of this one was much much less compelling than book 1. I really did not care about the characters or storyline in this one. Disappointed.

In 1972, when she was seven, Firoozeh Dumas and her family moved from Iran to Southern California, arriving with no firsthand knowledge of this country beyond her father's glowing memories of his graduate school years here.

Light and sweet, this author has a way of coaxing the kindness out of her own stories. I laughed aloud often. I’m a better person for reading Dumas’ books.
